Cummins impellers

Checking here to find out about location and costs of changing impellers on a 2001 400 Sedan Bridge. These are Cummins engines 430Hp Twin Diesels 6CTA Diamond series. We were given a quote of $2000 to replace both impellers which seems high. I noticed $600 above. We are East Coast in NY. Also, can anyone post a picture of the location of the impellers? Thanks.
I have the same boat and engines. I do mine myself. Starboard is super easy. 30 minutes to an hour. Port requires pulling airsep filter housing and air pipe going from aftercooler to engine, to get access. 1-4 hours depending how experienced the mechanic is. So 5 hours labor max. Shouldn't cost you more than $600-$800 if you hire it out.

Follow the hose from the strainer to the pump. On the aft side of the pump is a triangularish plate with three bolts in it. Take of that plate and there is your impeller.

I have the "upgraded" Sherwood pumps. The pumps from Tony at SBMar are better. I use these impellers: marinepumpdirect.com/two-pack-sherwood-17000k/. If your pumps are the original Sherwoods that came on the boat, you may want to change them out. Leaking seals can corrode the shaft. If it were to break while the engine is running, well, you go from full water flow to zero water flow instantly. I've been told that you cannot shut down the engines fast enough. Something to think about.

For the starboard engine, it may be easier to remove the pump from the engine and work on it topside. There is a key on the impeller shaft, that should be at 12:00 when you remove the impeller, otherwise it will fall into the suction hose. As far as an impeller removal tool, a machine thread bolt works just fine. I can't remember the details, but I just took my new impeller to Fastenal and found a bolt for $5. It is not that hard of a job. Use lots of lube or soap when installing the new impeller. And don't worry about which way the vanes are curved. The pump will get it straight as soon as it turns over.

Jaybeaux, he has straight drives so his engines are flipped 180 from yours. His problem engine is the port. It is harder for me to remove the port pump than just replacing its impeller.
 
I'm not intimately familiar with the 6CTA, but the attached picture shows where the raw water pump is located. $2000 to replace the impellers does seem high and I'd lean more towards the $600 figure unless there is something unique about access to the pump & impeller on the 6CTA.
