it broke....

so my issue is the prop keeps spinning even in neutral. as soon as it starts it turning... it will not go anywhere but its turning even if I try reverse it does not change just keeps turning... it is making a crazy knocking noise also...

edit
"Sat was all day no issues... Sun I did hit something but it worked for hours after forward and reverse. I was cruising about 3000 RPM and 35mph for a good 10 mins... when it started raining.. I slid it back to neutral and put up the top and when I went to take off again it would not do anything I did not think at the time but the prop never really stopped turning but it was not enough to move the boat"

Directions I should start in

1999 SD 210 5.0L

A "crazy knocking noise" can't be good... sounds like a failed Alpha drive.

Best of luck and welcome to CSR!

With the engine off and gear selector in neutral, spin the prop by hand. It should spin freely in both directions. Now alternately put the gear selector in fwd and rev (assuming an Alpha drive) and do the same things - should not spin in one direction and click in the other. Compare. You may get away with just adjusting the brass barrel adjuster... or it could need a cable as Scof said, or worse.

Sometimes, a prop will spin simply from the gears sloshing the gear lube... which "could" mean you need new seals. Do this safely, but can you stop the prop from spinning with a piece of wood?

When you hear the knocking, what position is the drive in? If it's tilted up, with the engine running, you can damage things.

I am going to update with the outdrive information as soon as I can I did not think about that before I left for work... Thanks in advance and for the replies so far

Check that you have not spun the hub in the propeller. Did you strike anything while running? I assume the propeller was working fine your first trip out?

another possibility is the coupler has let go. 21 year old boat may have worn it out.

Transom Serial Number OL548263... when I put it in mercruiserparts.com it says this

BRAVO I/II/III STERNDRIVE AND TRANSOM ASSEMBLY

Looks like an Alpha to me based on pictures.. but I am only a two day boat owner

I put "O" instead of "0" now I get ALPHA ONE GEN II STERNDRIVE AND TRANSOM ASSEMBLY

follow lazy daze's test first so you know its going into gear or not.

Did you notice the temperature on the engine begin to rise? If something in the upper failed in the upper or vertical drive shaft your impeller would stop turning and engine temperature would start to rise.

edited the main with more details

Alright, so not as bad as it could be... the set screw that holds the shifter lever to the upper shift shaft came out. Also when I was being a green horn boater I trimmed the outdrive all the way up and ran it. this made one of the U-Joint caps come off and was rattling around.

Thanks for all the help
