I am in the midst of re-bedding my deck hatches just as general maintenance. There was a black gasket between the deck and the frame of the hatch that I have removed and will need to replace. I am a little confused as it seems some people use a good caulking/sealant instead. When I look around online for a gasket from Taylor Made the closest I can find is a sponge gasket #1726. Anyone have some input the best way to re-install it?

I think the best bet is to make your own "gasket" out of 3m 4200. Put a bead around the opening when you install. Put the hatch in and lightly screw into place. Don't tighten as the product will squeeze out. Let is setup and then tighten.

What about Butyl Tape? This is above the water line (obviously) and the butyl tape is not "permanent".

I used 3M 4000UV between the hatch and the deck when I rebed my hatch this past fall. Butyl tape is good but I felt the hatch didn't have enough weight to compress the butyl tape adequately. I'd have to rely on the screws for compression and I didn't want to do that.

I used butyl tape on one of mine and I ended up re-doing it with 4200 because it leaked with the tape...
