1997 550 sedan bridge, the last two times I started the engines the starter switches on the bridge would not shut off the engines. I had to use the emergency stop switches next to them to turn off the engines. I have tried a new rocker switch but the same thing happened. Any ideas what could be the issue? Thanks

Detroit diesels...it has a red toggle switch next to the starter switch for each engine. they are labeled emergency stop. its the only way i could them to shut down.

I am assuming you have 6V92s in your boat. 1997 vintage. These engines use an electrical solenoid that allows the engine to start and move in the opposite direction to shut the engine down. Im not sure how to post a pic here but they should be easy to find. They are on top of the engine, look like a small silver can,(if they have not been painted)they will have an arm protruding out of one end and some wiring coming out of the other end. Locate one of them and then have someone turn the rocker switch to run (not start). Note which way the arm moves. Then leave the rocker switch alone and move the shutdown knob to shut engine down and see if arm moves in opposite direction. Oh, and if your set up is like mine, the ignition breakers, key switches and rocker switch must all be in the run position to shut the engines down (same as they would be to start). If any of those three items are not powered then there is no power to activate the solenoid to move to the shutdown position.
