Sea Ray 550 Sedan Bridge 2005.
Engines
MAN 900
Twin Disc MG-5114
I have the 2005 550 Sedan Bridge with MAN 900's. The boat is about one year new to me and I am getting ready to do the oil change. My last boat had Volvo Penta diesels and had a little different configuration. The engine oil change seems pretty straight forward. The question I have is the gear box. I attached a picture of a filter that is mounted above the gear box and looks like it is plumbed for the gear box. Am I correct in thinking this is the gear box oil filter?
Thank you.

If it's a Twin Disk MG5114, That's it Bob. 3 gallons of Rotella 30 (40 if you are in FL). That is a CAT hydraulic filter used there and it will work fine. I have a cross ref list of filter numbers if you would like it...
There is also a screen to clean. You can get the Twin disk manuals online from their website.

I do have the MG5114 gear box and thank you for confirming what I thought on the filter. I do have a Manuel that talks about the screen to be removed and cleaned. Is removing the screen as straight forward as it seems or is there any surprises I should expect? The cross reference list of filters would be appreciated. On a side note, I really like the Bimini extension you did over the cockpit. Was that a factory option or did you have it made custom?
Thanks again

Bob

Carter is correct that there are a number of filters that cross reference to the original but I have found some of them manufacturers to perform less than desirable in other applications. Twin Disc installed Donaldson P164375 as the OEM supplied filter when new, though they're not cheap compared to some of the crosses, maybe $15-20 more per filter.

Thank you Brian, I will check into the filters. a little more money sounds like cheap insurance for what they are protecting.

Bob - We love that cover! The PO had it added. We have changed the white cover to Captain Navy to match the rest of the boat. He had it made out of aluminum - if I had to do it over, I would use SS.

Here are my cross refs.
Transmission Filters:

  • Twin Disk PM 11652
  • CAT 1G-8878
  • Donaldson P164378
  • Fleetguard HF 6553
  • NAPA 1455 $31.45
I am using Donaldsons, but am considering switching to CAT filters.

I’ll post the crossrefs to the 58 Thread.

I found a closeup for you of our cockpit fly. As usual it’s sideways.

Ok, Carter, now that you fixed the orientation of that pic, you’ve got to get a new signature pic with your antennaes straight and vertical. It’s been driving me crazy since you bought that beauty even though I’m pretty sure that was the POs YW photo.

You and Gary (Four Suns) and antenna orientation - I could never post a pic from summers on the TN River - we have them 45° back for our covered slip! LOL!

Hello Carter, hope all is well. You gave me some good information on the gear box oil filters so I thought I would reach out to you again. According to Twin Disc, I should use straight 40 weight motor oil with a rating of Caterpillar TO2 or Allison T-4. Just thought I would get your opinion on what brand oil you use on the gear boxes. I use the Shell Rotella 5W-40 T6 for my engines and generator. Thank you in advance, Bob.

Bob, I also use the Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 for my engines, Shell Rotella T4 15-W40 for the generator and Shell Rotella T1 40W for the transmissions.

Do you think the T4 15-W40 is better for the generator then the T6 5W-40? Or not a whole lot of difference?
Thank you again for the information on the gear oil.

I don’t know that you could do any damage with the 5W-40 but Onan spec’d 15W-40 for the gen so that’s what I’ve always used. The T6 is a fully synthetic oil while the T4 is a synthetic blend.

Hi Bob - Brian (BMAC) covered it - I use Rotella T-1 40 in the transmissions. Delo 400 15W40 in the genny - although my "MAN man" changed the genny oil when he did may major service. He put in the "gold-plated" Delvac ESP 5W40 full synthetic. I'm not going to worry about it even though our genny manual states "synthetic oil is not recommended. We put 600 hrs a year on the genny, so it gets changed every 200 hours.

Once again gentlemen, I really appreciate the input.
Thank you.
Bob
