11/15/2020: gales bring 12-16 foot seas to our harbor today. 68MPH wind gusts.

They were forecasting 7’-9’ to the odd 11’ on Erie today

The heavy equipment arrived at our cottage on Georgian Bay to start the construction of a stone erosion control breakwall in front of our place and our neighbors. We have lost about 80ft of our beachfront to high water and waves, and last nights gale took another 5 feet. The lots you see used to be gentle sloping sand dunes to the waters edge that was about 80ft further out from where it is now. The cobble you see was buried under 8 to 10 ft sand dunes last year.

It was a good blow, that's for sure. I was busy today, but tomorrow I will go down to the marina and check out the dock damage if they don't already have it cleaned up.
We have friends that live on the water where these houses were severely damaged, I don't recall this type of damage there before. Usually it's later into the winter and the spray freezes on the houses until it builds up to the point when the house just caves in under the weight of all the ice.

Lake Erie seems like it has bigger waves than Lake Michigan. I wonder if this is because it is not as deep?

Doesn't look so bad... Try being the middle of the Atlantic in a hurricane... I was on a merchant ship taking waves on the bridge at 120' in the air, and doing 40 degree roles... Luckily I was young and stupid and thought it was fun... I have taken 20' waves in my sundancer, in a storm coming in and going out an inlet... You have to watch to make sure you don't let those waves hit you broadside...
