I wanted to do my next oil change through the engine oil pan drain plug as opposed to sucking it out of the oil dipstick tube- and purchased a hose kit from Overtons. Prior to installing the kit, I just happened to check its form and function and found that the capped end of the hose would not fit through the garboard drain of my boat. Not just the cap, but also the crimped section wouldn't fit. This pretty much defeats the purpose of the kit- so I ended up returning it. I'm just wondering if there is another similar kit out there that anyone is using first hand- that will fit through the garboard drain. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

That's odd, I never would of guessed, ahead of time, that it wouldn't fit. But looking at the picture, I can see why. It doesn't appear that that particular one is designed to go through the hole with that big cap. Even if it could, how would you pull it through? There's no tether. Merc makes their own kit, for what it's worth (with a tether attached to a new drain plug. Do you know if you have a 1/2" or 12mm oil pan plug? Both were used and you never really know till you check. If you had to guess, though, go with the 1/2".

However, you don't HAVE to pull it through the garboard drain plug hole. You could just route it up towards the top of the engine and secure it in place till you need it -- then do the suck out from there.

Thanks for your reply. I've never actually pulled the drain plug before but based on www.boats.net Mercruiser parts catalog (using my engine serial number), the actual oil pan thread is a 12mm. At the same time, the Mercruiser kit you're referring to is listed as "obsolete" in the same catalog so I don't believe its available anymore  . I do like your idea of using this hose as a suction point though so I much just do that if I can't find another hose that actually fits through the garboard drain. On my next oil change, I plan to suck as much oil as I can from the dipstick tube, then pull the engine pan plug and actually measure how much oil is left behind by this method. I tend to be OCD on certain things and the idea of leaving any of the old oil in the drainpan during an oil change doesn't appeal to me.

I have the oil drain hose wire-tied with easy access so that I can hook up my pump and suck it out. Be very, very mindful of pulling the oil plug. That is something that you do not want to do unless it is absolutely necessary-IMHO...If you were to accidently cross thread the plug, strip it out, or in anyway develop a leak there, the engine must be pulled...just a word of caution...others may chime in and feel different, but this is what I have been told and it sure makes sense. I had to have mine pulled to replace the oil pan...

I did the same thing on my 210 BR when I had it. I connected the drain hose to the oil pan and when I drained the oil I screwed a 3/8" pipe nipple that was 6" long on the end of the hose and that would fit thru the garboard drain hole. When the hose was not in use I zip tied it vertically on the side of the engine block with the end of the hose higher than the oil pan. It worked well but it did take a while to drain all the oil out of the pan. I just worked on other things while the oil was draining.

Thanks for the reply guys. I may end up buying one of these: http://www.qwikvalve.com - and adding a nipple attachment to where I can attach a hose. I've had one of these on my 250K+ mile Honda Odyssey without a single problem. I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner. I've been reading about them online and really couldn't find anything negative about them. Any inputs would be appreciated.
