Garmin has had a bad few days..

I have a Garmin watch and use Garmin Connect for fitness. I agree it's been acting weird over the last week. I thought it was my new phone but now I know. Bummer....

I know their aviation side was hit as well, pilots not being able to access flight plans etc..

very scary, several US companies are being hit as we speak, all sizes and shapes
The article is a bit nefarious. The issue is manifested within Oracle applications that Garmin uses. Oracle in which we operate many of our critical business applications is working patches to correct the weakness. Microsoft who is also deeply embedded with Oracle products has interestingly issued a critical patch for their server platform which is listed as mandatory by Homeland Security.
I guess the message is there is much more to the story....

This is something that should never happen to a critical infrastructure company. If they had taken their backups offline.....they would have been able to clear the stack and restore it to a point of confidence and raised the FU Flag to the hackers.

It boggles the mind that once someone gets an Admin password they can dance around encrypting critical files and databases. It is beyond stupid if the backups are online and available for them to encrypt as well. Hopefully Garmin was smarter than that but that is what happened to City of Baltimore and a host of other companies.

Paying the hackers won't solve the problem.

Not related to Garmin, but scammers.

I came across this YouTube Chanel where a very intelligent computer hacker uses his hacking skills for good.

Basically he gives scammers access to his virtual computer.

As the scammer is messing up his faux computer, with a goal of the scammer then requiring a gift card to let him regain access, he is secretly messing with the hackers computer.

He never asks for money from the scammers. Basically, he destroys their ability to keep scamming.

He does this part time for fun. I wish our government paid him to do this full time so he could get more scammers.
