I'm new with doing maintenence on boats. I watched a couple of videos on changing gear lube. When draining old gear oil does the gear oil in the reservoir drain also or do you need to pump it out.

Second question is....if the gear oil does drain from the reservoir do you have top off the reservoir after screwing the plugs back into the drive or does the reservoir fill when pumping the oil into the drive?

If you are patient enough it will drain, or just suck it out.
Pump from the bottom plug until it comes out the top vent. Then you can Put the top plug in, pump it in from the bottom plug, until the reservoir begins to fill, let it sit for a bit to burp then put in lower plug and top off reservoir.
Others will stop pumping when it comes out the vent then put in lower plug and just pour into the reservoir. That is fine as well, but keep fluid in the boat because after a heat up and cool down cycle the reservoir will need topped off again.

Thanks that helped alot.

not sure if I should start a new thread or you can help me.

I have a 2011 185 sport i/o merc 4.3 tks v6 I believe 190 horse.

I don't know what oil to put in the boat. I did find a unopened quart of merc 25w40 in the boat so I'm assuming to use that kind??. I tried to research it but I'm coming up with all different answers. I went to a marina and asked for the merc 25 w 40 and he told me that unless you been putting fully synthetic there is no sense of putting in fully synthetic in now. I told him a marina been doing the oil changes for the last 4 years so I doubt they put in fully synthetic oil.

He gave me merc 10w30. I was trying to research and it looks like 10 w 30 is for outboard engines.
I live in nj and use the boat from April to about end to sept. I'm totally stumped

25w40 is the correct viscosity, 10w30 is not. Merc makes a semi synthetic or conventional. Either would be fine for that motor. Can buy the conventional version at Walmart under the quicksilver name as well.

Thanks for the response. Got to go back to the and get the right oil. ready to do some maintenence so the marina doesn't rip me off anymore
