I was messing around with my electronics tonight and realized that the axiom apparently has two wireless radios in it. Which means that I can use one radio to hotspot to my phone and the other radio can be used as a wireless access point for other devices.

My simrad go7 connects to the axiom and so does my iPad. The axiom shares the hotspot connection with both of these devices. Which also means that I can connect my iPad to either the axiom or the simrad over the same connection and view their screens directly on the iPad. Even if I’m in the cabin I can connect to either device and interact with it as if I was sitting at the helm. I can also run navionics on the iPad and have a third screen with its own maps. It grabs GPS and depth data from the axiom over the wifi network.

I am convinced that most of us use less than 30 percent of our electronics' actual capabilities. I know that I fit that description anyway. I know just enough about how they work to get me where I am going but know that there is so much more they can do. Realistically, I have spent the last thirty years boating in the familiar waters of the SF bay and Sacramento River Delta and started out with simple dead reckoning with a compass and charts and then when the GPS became prolific, I remember only being comfortable cruising if I also had a chart out on the dashboard. I have never even learned how to follow a course with my auto pilot. I use it just to keep a straight course line from point to point. I keep telling myself that I should take the time to learn to use the capabilities of the technology but just never get around to it.
Carpe Diem

I agree. It doesn’t help that the manuals for these things are 300 pages long.

I have found the raymarine live videos on YouTube to be incredibly useful for the raymarine products. Would highly recommend those to anyone with their products.

It makes me wonder what capabilities are hiding in the mercury devices.

I love using my iPad as a mirror to monitor the Simrad from the cabin on the hook.

fuel level, voltage, radar, anchor drift, anchor alarm, etc...

that part is really cool, I never noticed navionics was grabbing the data from the local devices

I'm not sure what data the axiom is making available over wifi, but I can only get navionics to pull GPS and depth data. It ignores heading and AIS from what I can tell.
