*Gen 3 Cool Fuel Module Issue*

No I did mine as a maintenance item, I do some good traveling and felt the $ 1,800.00 is a great peace of mind.
I felt if I was miles away from home and they started to act up not only will my trip be ruined it will probably cost me way more then $ 1,800.00 and days waiting for the boat to be fixed.
Its all about the maintenance that gives me a great peace of mine.

Talking with my mechanic today and he said if they are not drained during the winterization process they can freeze and crack. He had one in the shop today he had sent off to be repaired.

What's odd is some folks have no issues at all. Mine are original from 06 and show no signs of issues. I replaced the filters and besides being a little dirty no signs of paint peeling.
I might just change them out to the new style next year to be on the safe side. Heck the 2 filters in each are almost $200 for twins.

The chips don't show in the filters, they're downstream. They collect first in the FPR

Correct. Regulator looked clean also. A lot of the ones I've seen that are bad the filters are really black. Perhaps after the fuel is filtered some contamination backs up and fouls it on that side. Don't know? Weird phenomenon.

That blackness is the inside of your fuel tank to CF3 fuel line slowly dissolving.

Can you post the contact info for whom you spoke to at Sea Ray? Maybe a scan of the receipt / packing slip? When I called they directed me straight to my local dealer, which isn't real local, stating they had to be installed by an authorized dealer. I just had my injectors cleaned as they were all plugged up with paint. Need to do the cf3 mods next.

Just bought my 2008 boat end of last season so still discovering what I got. Just found the boat appears to have one engine with cool fuel module with a drain plug, and one without. The starboard side has no drain plug and has P/N 864650. I assume this is Gen 3 ready to cause havoc. Port side has no part number but has hose clamps on cooling. This does not look recently replaced.

I'm not sure if having one already replaced is good or bad news.

An update for posterity. Last week I changed the plugs again and swapped out the throttle position sensor. No change. I sprayed some carb cleaner around the throttle body looking for vacuum leaks (didn’t find any) then one quick shot in the throttle body itself. Ran the boat up above 4K rpm and decelerated over 20 times and no popping. Took it out next day and still no popping. Took the boat to Florida as planned and still no popping. Ran into a 35 year experience Merc mechanic yesterday and we got to chatting. Described the issue and he smiled and started nodding his head. Asked him if he has ever experienced this and he said “sure have”. He told me I needed to spray some carb cleaner into the throttle body intake tonclear up some gunk that was causing the intake valve to not properly close when decelerating. I excitedly told him that’s essentially what I did. He told me I should spray some carb cleaner on a rag and wipe down the inside of the throttle body and that I should find a ring of gunk that needed to be removed. This will prevent the situation from reoccurring. Amazing. After all of this it was an $8 fix!

Thank you guys for all your help. Hopefully this thread will help somebody else some day searching for these symptoms.

I have a 2012 Sea Ray 220 Sundeck with the Mercruiser 5.0 Bravo 3. Just dropped it off at Marinemax with an OBD fault for Emission Control system, Fuel System O2 Sensor not working properly. They seem to believe that it is do to this issue discussed in this thread. It makes sense because about 2 years after owning the boat I got an OBD O2 Sensor fault. After spending a year messing with it I purchased 4 new O2 Sensor and replaced them. Each year sense then I would get the same fault for a few days then it would go away. Now the fault has stayed on and after learning about all the above I decided to take it in.

Can anyone on hear give me an idea of what to expect in costs? Marinemax seems to think that Mercury will pay for the parts and I pay for the labor.

I bought a 1997 330 EC in summer 2015 that had new 8.1's installed Jan '14. I ended up having the Cool Fuel Module issue, not sure why unless they used the old Cool Fuel Modules in the new engines. My Mercury authorized mechanic says Mercury only covers a limited number of labor hours, not enough to do the job correctly including cleaning the injectors and rails. I kicked in some extra $'s for labor to cover the difference.

Probably not your problem, the paint issue was resolved well before 2012. Water kills O2's... could that be your issue ?

Took it to dealer. They basically just changed the spark plugs and cleared the codes. Needless to say after 30mins on the lake it’s back at the dealers.

The smart gauge is showing:
SYSTEM FAULT
OBD SERVICE SOON
FUEL SYSTEM
EXHAUST OXYGEN SENSOR IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY

EMISSION CONTROL PROBLEM SEE DEALER SOON

STBD SYSTEM FAULT 50

Maybe someone has seen this before and can help?

Are you handy with a wrench?

Swap the oxygen sensors from port to starboard.

Run the boat and see if the trouble code moves to the port side.

Well got the call from Marinemac yesterday. They say it is the fuel cool issue and it will be $900 to repair. That’s on top of the $500 already spent. Does this sound like the ballpark price for this repair?

Seems a little higher than I would think.
Mercury has been supplying all the parts free of charge.

Customers have to pay the labor for installation.

They’re probably billing $150/hr for 6 hrs. I would think that I could be completed in 3-4 hours.

Did they charge you $500 to change plugs and clear codes?

I know that they have expenses to cover but seems a little excessive if that’s the case.
