I started the generator last weekend and noticed it was loud and not pumping water. I ordered a new impeller and installed yesterday. I don’t use the generator a lot and had just changed the impeller about 7 months ago. After I replaced I noticed the way it sits in there doesn’t look right. It’s like the pump isn’t aligned or something. I took a picture.
Has anyone come across this or is this normal?
Thanks

Looks like the the impeller hub is just spinning on the shaft?

The impeller is spinning and drawing water. The opening in the housing looks weird at the bottom. There isn’t as much room at the bottom of the housing. That’s why the impeller looks smashed at the bottom. The picture is turned sideways for some reason.

Maybe disconnect the coil wire and crank over the generator with the cover off The pump and watch what The impeller is doing? It definitely looks misaligned somehow are you sure you reinstalled it with the flat of the insert on the flat of the shaft almost looks like it might’ve been misaligned

Thats normal. Thats how it creates suction, it almost flattens out on one side.

What was wrong with the impeller that you took out?

Incorrect.....that is exactly how the impeller is supposed to look. The "smashed" vanes and eccentric shape are exactly what creates the water draw. It's odd that you just replaced it and 7 months later it failed. Make sure the O ring is greased and not getting smashed when you reinstall the cover.

It's normal.....I would be checking the rest of the system:

-Hull intake
-strainer
-heat exchanger for blockage.

A simple test to eliminate the hull intake and strainer is to remove the intake hose from the strainer to the generator and open the seacock. You should see a stream of water consistent with a sink faucet. If not.....something is blocked.

If that is okay ....I would check the heat exchanger for debris. If a previous impeller burned up.....the pieces head straight to the heat exchanger.

Thanks guys! Good to know this is normal. When I took the cover off and looked at the old one, it looked liked some of the fins were positioned in there wrong from the first time I replaced. I actually got the old impeller out and after a bit, it looked normal. Before I installed the new one I gave the starter a quick hit to check shaft rotation. It’s counter clockwise. Definitely getting water flow. It seems to be working now so I’ll keep an eye on it. Like I said, it’s very seldom that i use it.
Thanks again!

Genny's like to run. You should fire it up for 15 minutes or so when you are out. Keeps everything clean, lubed and loose. Also, nice to know she is reliable if and when you do need her.
