My Westerbeke generator runs great for 20-30 mins then dies

if I wait by it, and press the preheat, it will continue to run, til it happens again

Walter flow seems good, impeller is 1 year old, strainer is clean

thinking one of the sensors is either operating properly or not....

many help appreciated!

Should have an oil temp sensor and an exhaust temp sensor. If either one trips it shuts down the unit. Sounds like this is happening, and while you let it cool it resets.

Get an IR temp gun and check the temps. Your Westerbeke manual will specify at what temp the sensor trips.

We just had a similar issue, turned out heat exchanger was clogged. Looked like we had plenty of water flow, but I guess it was not enough. Also check oil level, Westerbekes are very sensitive to being to the full mark

I would also check your electric fuel pump. Just to verify all systems are operating correctly. But, if it is one of the temp sensors, you should be able to verify with a continuity/multimeter. Don't just throw parts at it.

Thank you for the response

While I was messing with my starboard motor and looking to find the fuel pump, checked the oil, clean as a whistle and on the full line.

Changed the fuel pump out a couple weeks ago, was struggling to start at all, no fuel was pumping then.

it could be the impeller, it’s been exactly a year, hoping not, probably have 15 hours in it

once I get the starboard motor right, I will test the sensors.

thank you!

Pressing the preheat switch bypasses the sensors. If your not losing oil and the impeller is good I'd look into those.

Is it stalling while under load? If so check the oil in the governor. It to is very sensitive to its oil level
