I am trying to learn as much as I can on my GPS Map 498. The GPS came with the boat I purchased last summer and works great when installed on boat and powered via DC. When I winterized I brought GPS in house to learn more through the simulation mode BUT it will not even turn on via the instructions from the manual. Is there an internal battery?....Am I missing something as to why it won't power on?....

Seems like the only reasons it wouldn't turn on would be 1.) no 12V or 2.) something is now broken?

I rigged up my Garmin gear at home a couple years back to do exactly what you are trying to do. Get them updated, learn how to use them. As long as you're applying 12V they should certainly work. Though obviously they won't get a satellite fix sitting inside your house.

That's what I want to do, learn, learn,learn....I only have 1 cannon plug connection on back of unit. Do I use alligator clips on back for power pins?.....Anything else?

Ohh you don't have the harness off too? Yeah...this may be a bit messy. Ideally you'd have the full harness with you. Easily identify the + and - leads so you can power it. I wouldn't recommend trying to power the unit without the full harness connected. It seems highly likely you could fry something trying to connect directly to the pins...

I had a 492 and still have the power plug for use with a pc.

Is it possible to even purchase one for my laptop now?..I know the unit is old.

So I think you are in luck, I have that adapter and have no use for it now. It's like new and has the DB9 serial connector on as well for the PC connection.
PM me and it's yours.
