Great Lakes Ice Update.

Here’s a Canada crossing story, so of course 19 year old males living in metro detroit in the late 90’s early 00’s we would cross to Canada to drink at the bars legally, get wasted then drive back across the border back to Michigan. While one time crossing back from Canada sh*t faced, we pulled up to border patrol of course they went through their usual questions and knew we were sh*t faced, well this border patrol agent signals for the drug dog to do a sweep on the car while we were being questioned. Of course it hits on something so they start asking a million questions about drugs in the car, which we had none but we couldn’t convince them. Long story short they make us pull over and do a full search of the car, don’t find anything, bring the dog back, he hits on something inside my buddies old mustang, so they go to tearing apart the inside of the car, removed the seats started cutting the carpet, I can’t make this up, the dog had hit on a old dog biscuit that had worked it’s way under the carport at one of the seat brackets on the passenger side. The BP agents start laughing as he shows his partners what the dog had hit on. He then turns to us who are all up against the wall and says your free to go, we said are you going to put the car back together, … the guy tells us to F*ck off and to get the f*ck out of there as they knew we were a bunch of 19 year olds drunk and couldn’t do anything. So like good drunks, we threw the seats in the car and drove home with nothing on the inside of the vehicle attached.

Another border crossing story. So, my father was born in Canada, but my grandparents emigrated to Canada from Yugoslavia in the 1930s. They had an inherent fear of police from living in what was then a communist dictatorship. I guess that was how my dad grew up (learning their fear of police), because he was always insanely nervous at border crossings.

He just oozed nervousness, and the stress also made him aggressive with the border officers when they started with the expanded set of questions. I think our hit rate for full car searches when we drove to the US was well over 50%. Once we were teenagers, we would joke about it as we approached the border. Rubber glove jokes and the like.

This thread is about ICE not Tom Selleck.
I could have a launch date in about 5 weeks, I need to get waxing.

It looked a little more hospitable last June. The people at Apostle Island Marina told us that the nearest laundromat was in Washburn, couldn’t believe they didn’t have one at the marina so after a few days we went to Pikes Bay. Nice place, new laundry. We walked the Brownstone Trail back to Bayfield each day for exercise and made the run from there to Isle Royale.
I won’t be in the water for 6 weeks. Plenty of time, never let ‘em see you sweat.

The only time we go to Canada is to see my mother in law… so I have no problem pushing back on the border agents. You would be surprised how they back down when you hit them with logic…. I have yet to be denied entrance which is a bit annoying :)

Just chatted with a buddy of mine on Pikes Bay in Bayfield WI. Supposedly the ice 'just' blew out this last weekend. Geez.....

No ice on St Clair (Anchor Bay) this morning. ;)

Sure wasn't a pretty day...

There's still a little ice here and there in NW Michigan. This was Saturday 4/23 between Petoskey and Bay Harbor. The Petoskey city harbor was completely iced in. Snow in the forecast for the next couple days.
