HELP..... 6.2 > 5.7 Dealer Mistake

Nick mentioned hot water tank - not engine related. One year I somehow forgot to winterize mine - it literally blew apart at the seam. Something Mythbusters would do.

haha sorry to hear that Ron guess you learned that. . . and yeah its the Hot water Tank that has a hole and in the surveyor pics you could a see a pink spill in the engine bay see attached picture.

It could be bait-n-switch... but could just as easily be a mistake. You'll get more from them if you approach it as a mistake. I'd want to first verify the serial number of the engine - if you can post that, I can check it. DON'T get the serial number from the flame arrestor cover (there's a small possibility that it's the wrong one) - look on the edge of the flywheel cover, on the stbd side for a small, metal tag.

Since the paperwork says 6.2, then I think the fair thing to do is to ask for a refund of an amount to equal to the USED value of a 5.7MAG vs 6.2MAG. You can't go by the new value. However, this is a somewhat gray area... trying to find the value of a used stern drive, that is. What you can do is go to the NADA Guides website, and find the base value for your boat with the 300HP engine, then do the same thing with 320HP - that's probably the easiest/only way to get a value. However, just a side note, the boat would have likely sold for the same amount regardless of which engine was in there. But in this case, I think this is a fair way to go about it.

Hot water heater... more than likely it just rusted out over time. It's pretty hard to NOT winterize a heater properly.

What's going to be a little hard for you is that you bought it in January and are just now seeing these issues. Of course, a lot of this depends on how well the dealer stands behind what they sold... and HOW it was sold... with "zero warranty"... an "implied warranty" that states everything works... an actual warranty... etc

Just sayin, if the engine can't be run because of no cooling, how can you be assured of its health ?

Did you see the boat prior to purchase? Did you lift the engine cover? Did you buy subject to an acceptable survey? If no to any of those questions....shame on you. If yes....oops.

Ass kicking now over, I think I would go back to the dealer and explain the problem. As I understand it, what was written in the purchase was not delivered, therefore....no sale. Tell them to return the boat and give you a full refund. Or, as an alternative, if you like the boat, tell them you will keep the boat provided you are happy with the performance and they provide a refund of the difference between the this boat and a comparable model with a 6.@. You will need to do some research to determine what one with the 6.2 would sell for. I'd check Yachtworld to get some prices.

Good luck....I think, depending on the integrity of the dealer, you may be stuck with it.

Thank you guys so much for your feed back. .
See attached picture of Purchase Agreement

I am IN LOVE with the boat and i am keeping it. My survey guy only wrote what he saw 350 MAG MPI. . I will take a picture in a bit and show you what they listed as. I am also waiting on replay from sea ray rep. on the price difference between 5.7 and 6.2

Hi . . . Of course i saw the boat i drove 5 hrs in middle of winter and snow storm to go see her and put a deposit on it lol

I can tell you (I work at a dealership) that the upgrade to the 6.2 was, indeed, in that $3K to $4K range (depending on a particular dealerships mark-up, of course). But remember, that is NEW price and you didn't buy a new engine.

FYI... the base upgrade to a 6.2L did NOT include closed cooling. The 6.2L is/was a stroked 5.7. Personally, as much I liked how that 6.2 ran, I always found that upgrade price tough to swallow.

Here's a survey that the dealer send to me.... this survey is from the previous owner as you can see it says 6.2

Well now there are TWO things off. That survey says "Horizon". That means it should have closed cooling (an upgrade over the base 6.2). I wonder if they had somehow mistakenly gotten the wrong survey correlated with your boat.

And just for reference... the serial number on that survey shows that it is, indeed, a 6.2L Horizon. But we still should know what YOUR engine's serial number is.

Okay so here are both Surveys
1. The Gilmore is the old owner
2. Nick Papazlatanov is mine.

Both serial numbers are the same. I thinks the surveyor of #1 was drunk or blind and made a terrible mistake. the Serial number match.

0W029102 is a 350MAG.

By the way, it is still showing as "open" for the "orange alternator wire" recall. Essentially, the orange wire could chafe with how it was installed. It's a no-cost thing for you to have it fixed.

oh i had no idea about the recall. Hopefully the guys i have it at right now can do it.

Let's put it this way... if they can't do this recall, then I wouldn't trust them to put gas in my tank! :) In other words, it's a very simple thing. If they are a Merc dealer, they'll get reimbursed for it.
