I have a 87 Searay 300DA. I needed an engine and bought this.

My mechanic tells me i have the wrong engine since it is LH rotation. The vendor tells me my mechanic is wrong since all marine stern drive engines are LH rotation and the rotation difference happens in the gearbox. What do I do now? I spent $700 on shipping from FL. and my mechanic tells me i need a new drive and prop. Both props turned to the right on my boat and it did not pull. hands off tracking straight.

Who is wrong here?

Thank You!

I thought i was buying a "STANDARD ROTATION" engine as i thought the LH application was to the port engine? This sucks!

Cheers

That E-BAY ad. does not say anything about being a reverse rotation engine. I would contact the seller and have them pay for the return shipping and send you the correct standard rotation engine if in fact they sent you a right hand rotation. I have the same boat as you, and both engines are standard left hand rotation. The only time a reverse rotation engine is used, is in an inboard application. Typically crusader. I think your mechanic is wrong. Hope this helps.

With outdrives, all standard motors turn to the LEFT when viewed looking from the flywheel, if both outdrives props turn the same (clockwise in fwd) you have standard rotation drives. For outdrives, Counter rotation takes place with a counter rotation lower unit, not an engine.

Your issue appears to be an incompetent mechanic. The engines don't change rotation, the out drive does.

Thanks for the info and link. The new engine is a LH rotation engine but according to that link it would not seem to unreasonable that it should be a RH rotation. My mechanic does not appear to be incompetent and has 30+ years on marine engines. It is his full time occupation. I would hate to eat $1400 in shipping if i dont have to. Can i change the drive for $1400 or less and make this work? What is the proper thing to do? What else do i need to do if my old motor is RH rotation? I will post pics of the old engine and new engine when I get home tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies!

Cheers

Crisis Over!

I have the correct application motor. My mechanic was mistaken!

Thanks for the help guys. Both motors are standard rotation or LH. with Alpha Gen 1 drives. The vendor was very patient with my inquiry and I highly recommend him for your engine needs. www.daddyosmarine.com

I think your wrong on that one. but maybey there is something on the 87s that is different. My buddie has the same boat as mine, 1988, and it has two standard rotation engines and one drive is an alpha 1 counter rotator, not gen 2. I am purchasing a counter rotating lower for mine this year.
Not so fast, counter rotating outdrives didn't exist back when his boat was made. They didn't exist until alpha 1 gen 2's came on the scene. In fact, in older boats it was not uncommon to have opposite rotating engines.

Now, as long as it doesn't do circles in forward gears, you're all set!

You know, thats funny. I had considered an SEI counter rotator, but after a lot of research reading about problems with these drives, I have decided to go with a Mercruiser lower. There are many problems with the aluminum not holding up in a salt water enviroment, gears and shaft failures probably due to substandard steel and hardening. Lots of folks say these drives are very loud due to loose tolerances. Also they say these drives are U.S. made...they are not. All of the components are manufactured in the fareast and are only assembled here. You cannot purchase a complete drive as advertized. They sell you an upper and a lower, they are shipped in two seperate boxes and you must purchase seals, water pump and fill the gear lube yourself. They also want you to change the gear lube after 15 hours of use initially, and folks have said the gear lube was loaded with metal filings. Whose paying for the haul and launch to do that?

and why exactly would it do circles? it was hands off tracking straight prior to changing the motor with the same application?

Just adding levity to a potentially disastrous situation. If one engine was spinning the wrong direction, it would do circles.
