On both struts there is a small hole about halfway down the area that holds the cutlass bearing. What is this hole for? Both my struts have one on both sides. They are about 1/8”. The reason I ask is I was cleaning up the struts to prep for paint and the holes have paint in them thatbis almost closing up the hole and I didn’t know if I should clean the paint out of them.

Each hole holds a set screw for the cutlass bearing. You can clean them up but they will get debris into them again.

To replace the cutlass bearing requires you to clean out the holes so that you can get an allen wrench into the set screw.

If you aren't replacing the cutlass bearing you can leave them alone.

Great, thanks for the info.
