honda generator

I think we're close to finding the "safest" way to use one. Kind of like "A guide to recreational crack use" sticky. I at least want to find out grounding and wiring requirements.

Okay, so you tell the fellow, "Sure! It'll power your a/c!" and then you hear nothing from him. Typical, you think, newbie comes, newbie asks question, and then newbie goes away without a thank you or anything. Thing is, the next week you read in the newspaper that a fellow boater and his entire family died on their boat, due to carbon monoxide poisoning.....

Then what? Do you see the proverbial slippery slope here?

I'll answer what they will not admit. NO they will not see it. They want affirmation what they are doing is right, and you are bad for telling them it is not. I firmly believe tham many of the posters, over the years we've gone over this, just can't be told they're practices are not safe and that offends them at a personal level, unlike a manifold or other parts discussions. MM

With respect to the USCG regulations, lets not get caught up in the semantics. The requirements for double clamping of fuel lines were not made to increase the sale of stainless steel hose clamps. They were made because a valid safety issue exists for making sure that fuel lines stay secure on a boat. To me the issue is not whether a portable generator is 'approved' by the USCG, but rather whether it will meet the technical specifications the regulations codify, e.g. clamps on fuel lines, ignition protection, etc.

In any event, it strikes me as odd that anybody would want to intentionally bring a piece of equipment on board their boat that did not meet the minimum safety standards.

She might meet the safety requirements but I wouldn't bring her on my boat.

I find it ironically hilarious that the Google advertisement on the right of this page changed to Honda portable generators.

Yep I noticed that too!! Who says they are not watching us. (LOL)

Probably a good thing. It might offend some of the people on this post. I find it funny that the same people who would hang out with their friends and bust thier chops over a few beers are the ones who can't lighten up on these forums. Email is by far the worst way to convey humor, anger, attitude and such UNLESS YOU TYPE IN CAPS OR ADD A FEW SMILEY FACES. It's all good, we love to boat and come here for knowlegde and entertainment. If you don;t like it CHANGE THE CHANNEL!

Here's another consideration since the carb dumps out the bottom of the gen.

Under federal law (the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and the Clean Water Act) it is illegal to discharge any petroleum
product into the water.

This is why we have absorbers in the bilge, to soak it up so it doesn't get dumped overboard. The Honda doesn't have a way to trap or catch it.

Excellent!

Like I said on page 1 of this ****ing fiasco......the original post was merely BS. Mission accomplished

Quint, got to agree with you on this one. The winner in this pi$$ing contest is the OP. Bet he's laughing his butt off. I know I have from the time he entered it until now. I must say though that the most amazing post is when someone calls another out on the net. Few understand the thin veil they have and how easy it is to find someone who has called you out.

You have to ask yourself, is it really worth the aggravation of yelling at a computer screen or pounding out a reply jab to a poster on a cyber page?

You're telling me no one learned anything? I know I learned a lot in this thread.

I do not see any ads, I thought it was because of sponsorship, but Chuck you have the same sponsorship I have, what gives? Actually it was likely not a coincidence, as I understand it Google, the provider of most ads on the web, has bots scan the web pages and position adds for relavancy. So if we were debating cameras I would be surprised if camera ads didn't appear in 24 hours or so. That is what they make the big bucks from. MM

I have read through the thread and agree some good facts were brought to light, it just irks me someone jumps on here and starts "generator wars" with their first and probably only post.

Funny you would post that now Turtle, I was just ready to ask that very thing. I am a veteran of a couple of the generator threads and thought this one brought out new some information along with the laughable, thanks to Turtle for some of the new info. Many also asked great questions inluding Woody. I still agree this was a set up but worthwhile all the same. MM

All the way to post #200

I know I learned alot... like pullmyfinger is probably some union goon that thinks he's crapped on because he doesn't have a genny in his boat. Maybe we can all pay dues to CSR so everyone has the same "stuff" on their boat.

MM.
Quite the contrary, but it is still very entertaining. Good info, colorful commentary and a touch Mano a Mano, that’s what makes it a great thread.

Sorry. forgot to add " IMHO"

As long as we don't have to all own QSM-11's (aka the bolt spitters)

Sounds good. Please make your check out to me and send them to my po box, or even easier just pay pal them to my email....

Lots of misinformation and opionions here not based on fact. but then what did you expect from some of the people here.

Lets look at the grounded neutral issue for one. The neutral must be tied to ground at one location only.
In your house this is at the entrance panel.
If you are connected to shore power this will be done at the dock service panel.

If you are not connected to shore power and running of a generator this will be done at the generator.
Yes I will repeat this. When running from a generator the neutral and ground are connected at the generator.

When you switch your transfer switch to shore power it disconnects the generator and thus disconnects the ground and neutral connection.

If you are running from an inverter the neutral and ground must be connected together. The inverter/charger that I have has a buit in transfer switch that takes care of this.

If you have an isolation transformer then the neutral on the secondary side is connected to the transformer case and to the engine negative terminal or its bus.

Floating neutrals are not good. The unfortunate thing is that most portable gernerators do not connect the neutral and ground.

the following is an exert from E-11 AC and DC ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS ON BOATS ABYC 2008

11.5.5.2 Grounded Neutral - A grounded neutral system is required. The neutral for AC power sources shall be grounded only at the following points:
11.5.5.2.3 The generator neutral shall be grounded at the generator.

11.5.5.6.1 Transfer of Power - The transfer of power to a circuit from one source to another shall be madeby a means that opens all current-carrying conductors, including neutrals, before closing the alternate
source circuit, to maintain isolation of power sources.
