since ive changed my gauges , I have lost hour meters. I picked up a couple of 2" units and want to install in the engine bay in a 2-gauge pod on the fwd bulkhead. for witing these things , can I take the pos lead to the pos side of each coil? as far as the ground, I was going to do a common ground to somewhere. any ideas of the closest point to where the charger is?

Yes. All the purple wires in the engine harness will be keyed (ignition) + bat power. Wired with it will allow your meter to count any time the key is on whether running or not. If you run either side of your hour meter circuit through a pressure switch tapped or T'd into an oil gallery, it will only count run time. Don't forget to include a low amp inline fuse in the event your wiring or meter develops a short to protect the rest on the ignition system.
