I'm having a tough time staying positive about the whole boating situation so far this year.

The 10 day forecast is mirroring the way I feel - damp, cloudy and cold. What the hell?

Maybe this is exactly the Spring I need to convince my wife we should move to Florida...

I've been on the boat (Cheboygan) working during the week for the last two weeks. Cold (even freezing) at night a few times, 60s during the day at best. The heater is getting a workout.

While not as nice as it will be in a month or so, it is still great to be on the boat. Long winter....60 feels great.

I can't decide if suffering through winter makes the summer even better here...or would fulltime summer weather be appreciated as much?

One thing for sure....of all the places in this world I have been....I love the straits in summer the most.

86 today in western NY after high 50s two days ago, back to low 60s next week. It’s been crazy

hopefully the lake warms up a bit in the next couple days it’s still very cold and when the wind comes out of the north feels like november.

You know what they say, “You can’t appreciate the good without the bad”, but I completely understand.
Being a trailered boat as well as a fair weather boater, it’s rare I get in before the end of June. End of May and June finds me doing repairs, polishing and getting it ready for the remaining 3 months of Summer. I imagine if I had a slip like most of you, I’d spend more time on it.

I have had 50 years of bad. I’ll enjoy the good, as soon as I can get out of this hell hole.

Warm and really windy today. Then down the tubes again. The "official" metro Detroit temp was 83° yesterday. Not nearly that on the water. Sweatshirts and jackets at Bumpers yesterday afternoon. This was docked there.

It's like a repeated kick to the sack. Plus, flooding.

We went to put the dock lines on the dock and unwrap our dock box earlier this week. Wind blowing off that 50ish degree water was brutal considering it was in the 70's away from the lake where we live. We were going to go in this past Tuesday but changed our minds. We'll see how the weather is next week. Going to be a crappy weekend with wind and rain. If I was still working, I would have launched by now. It'll get better.

So today is nice warm and breezy and also a small craft advisory. That seems to be the MO. Tomorrow will be cold and rainy and relatively flat seas.

Then it seems that all the nicest days are the days I’m driving to the boat not at the boat. UGH…

  • The best weather occurs the day before departure.
  • The second-best weather occurs the day after you return.

I took day off, was at boat to scrub the winter crud off, about killed me, hot as hell, by 1 I called it quits. Heading across the Bay in morning to my favorite tiki bar. Big day! Fark the price of gas. Don’t care.

Last weekend it was also hot. I was installing new canvas including the camper. I started to slow roast like a Thanksgiving turkey and almost had heat stroke by noon  Where is the nice weather with a breeze ???

Was about noon, heat hit me, on front deck. i fell down, knocked the bucket of soapy water, was not good. Finished up, went home took cold shower. Typical Maryland, goes from 50 to 90 in a day. Too old for this shit.

I guess I'm built for hot weather. The last full time job I had was warehouse mgr of a paper shredding company in central Florida. 120 days a year of 90+°. No a/c. A lot of young pups couldn't cut the work. In fact, most of the crew was over 40. I was 60 at the time.
Playing golf and mowing in the middle of the day was never an issue.

It's early in the season for this part of the Great Lakes. I haven't even been tempted to launch quite yet (Cheboygan Village Marina). I'll have the marina put the boat in the water the first week of June sometime. I did get out by Bois Blanc a couple times in my fishing boat during May, but as soon as a breeze kicks up over that 40° water, it's like a deep freeze out there.

And yes I agree. This is a pretty sweet place to run a boat.
