How old were you when you bought your first boat? The young are not buying boats...

Re: How old were you when you bought your first boat? The young are not buying boats

15................. Had mowed grass and performed small chores in my neighborhood for a few years to come up with $150. That would be like $1500 with today's value. All my friends were talking about buying their first car but I wanted a boat. We lived on a small stream that led into the river. That summer of 1962 was magical and I have never been without a boat since!!

I got a blow boat at 14. First motor was at 19, a 1966 Dorset with a 45hp Sears motor hung on the stern. I owned 8 boats in total, one new, the rest were all old. OLD BOATS ARE THE BEST BOATS!

10 years old, 10' aluminum beat up old thing c/w 6 hp Evinrude,,,,, that's when the addiction started. Regarding demographics - People perceive boating to be a "rich person's" activity. When we explain to friends and family that our capitol outlay and yearly moorage, maintenance, and fuel costs are equal to or less than the costs of running motor homes and similar RV's, they think we're making it up. We know people who will spend $25K+ on a travel trailer, lease an RV site for $1900.00 per year, and tow the rig back and forth with a 1 ton diesel powered pick up truck,,,, and they think they can't afford to go boating !!! I guess it's all in one's priorities. Some folks prefer to fight highway traffic to sit at an RV site and get eaten by bugs,,, and some of us prefer to float on the water while barbequing steaks and drinking margaritas and wine. I think a lot of it does depend on the "little ones" though. It may be a lot easier to keep youngsters occupied on land at an RV site than on a vessel where there is limited space to run around and burn off energy. Anyhow, I wouldn't trade our little 23 ft cuddy for a motorhome of ANY size. Boating is the whole reason we get up in the mornings and go to work 5 days per week. Can't imagine living somewhere that's not close to a major body of water.

37, and I didn't start small with a 320DA. Does it count that I had grandparents and aunts and uncles who lived on lakes so I had access to canoes, PWCs, paddleboats, pontoon boats and powerboats through age 21 and no need to buy one?
