Don't beat yourself up and over think it. A solid 4 volt head unit, proper size cables & wires of good quality and high quality speakers and amp. A 10" sub makes all the difference in the world. I went with the JL 6.5 MX stuff and their 5 channel amp and it sounds incredible to my old ears. About $1600 all in with Clarion head unit. I used the stock speakers in the cabin and ran them off the head unit with zone control. Acceptable but nothing compared to the cockpit. Did the install myself.
JL,Wetsounds,Fusion,Kicker,Rockford,Clarion ect. all make some great marine stuff. Most important part is to enjoy the music
