Looking to get a dingy / Inflatable and was wondering how everyone transports them.

There are a couple of Davits Clips on my swim platform but I would have to buy all the other parts
I also saw a few put their inflatables on the bow, but my bows not that big and then you would have some weight to deal with
what about towing it behind? good or bad?

also what size motor should I get, I am thinking that the main use would be to get to shore from a moring when we visit diff. ports

Thoughts?

Thanks

I have an 8.5ft zodiac with a 3.5merc. Here is a pic of it on my extended platform.

Hey Quint,
How do you attach it?
Unfortunitly I don't have the platform that you do, I am just stock
is the dingy big enough? how about the motor, good enough to get you moving or would you have rather had a larger motor?
Just trying to get the right setup the 1st time
Thanks for the reply

I tie it off to my cleats with some short pieces of rope (pre-attached to dinghy). The dinghy & motor is good for my needs. Not very heavy. The 3.5 merc will get you about 5-7 mph lightly loaded.....enough for some leisurely cove exploration or occasional run to shore etc.

I tie mine onto the swim platform. Works well - just am cautious when coming off plane.

I had my dinghy on the bow, and the boat rides great, but it obstructs you view, and it is a PITA to get it up there.. i take my engine off and stow it under the helm seat, and strap the dinghy to on the swim platform...

Keep in mind Quint is on a tranquil inland lake, not an ocean or bay.

I would think a guy with a name like "studman" would know how to transport his dingy:

Holy crap I haven't seen one of these since 10 grade gym class! I am a Contractor / Carpenter for 35yrs = STUDMAN

weaver davits are pricey but they work the best for smaller boats.

Yea that's what I am finding out, when I bought the boat the PO said " all you have to do is get the pads for the dingy" yea right. I am looking at like 400 bucks

I was thinking the same thing. got to be a pain getting on and off the bow.

so I guess just pulling it behind is a no no? I would think that it's got to be a pita when it comes to docking. we plan on visiting around to differant marinas so I have been told that a dingy is the way to go.
Guess i will keep looking
Thanks all for the imput

I made this for my dinghy. I have got a 8.5 Baltik with a 2hp Evinrude. It is a cross between the Weaver and All Inflatables systems. It has a quick detach system so it is easily removed when you want to use the swim platform. The stand-off bar attaches to the ski eye and one of the oar locks. The ropes cross under the dinghy and across the top; just pull on the ropes and it comes up. Not very hard to do unless it is full of water. The ropes then tie onto the rear cleats.

Sorry about not having any pictures with the dinghy on there. Also, please excuse the mess in my building. Let me know if you have questions.

Down and ready to put the dinghy in.

This is how it sits when up.

The underside. The knurled knob is for the release. There is nothing to see from the top of the platform.

I bought the extended davits from weaver. A lot of Sea-Rays (mine included) have the swim step ride a bit low. I didn't want the dinghy dragging in the water so I got the 4" tall davits.

My dinghy is a 10' Advance Cat so its a little heavier than most RIBs but I'm a big guy and wanted something stable. I got a Suzuki 6hp and a swivel mount so I can leave it on the dinghy.

I am a big fan on the weaver davits. I purchased the air floor model thinking I was going to inflate it everywhere I went - but that went south after 1 time :). I only have a 9'2" beam so I purchased the 240 (small dink). The ease of carrying it to port Jeff and just dropping it is great. I ended up downsizing my motor so it was lighter and easier to carry since I cant plane with two people anyway.

Good luck

That's a very cool and unique setup. I also like how you have special mount for the motor to tilt when the dink is on a side. Excellent end result.

Off topic No Regrets but I didn't know 290's did 60mph! Your signature picture is awesome. Looks like your hauling a$$! Cool!

Hey Skuza thanks
But I must admit that it's not me, I mean the PO used this photo when he had the boat up for sale
He told me he had hired a helicopter photo service that will take pictures from the air.
I liked it so much i use it for my sig. I thought it was pretty cool too.
So the boat IS mine but it's just not me driving, yet
