Has anyone installed hydrofoils on there dinghy? I have a hard time keeping my bow down on my dinghy and was curious to know if the hydrofoils will help.

I've got one on mine. I'm not sure how much it helps, (bought the motor with it on, haven't taken it off)

It does plane well, with proper weight distribution, or I have to lean forward to get it on plane... It does have a tendency to hook a little bit in fast turns.

Try adjusting the trim on the engine mount (if it has one) kicking the motor out of vertical (away from the transom when at rest) one or two notches (I have a removable pin and multiple slots on the motor bracket). This will kick the bow down and it will usually jump on plane. Becareful when you first do it as sometimes the boat bites too much and becomes very touchy. my .02 YMMV - Jeff

Jeff,
This is a question, not a correction. Wouldn't he want to bring the engine into the transom (i.e., trim it in)? I would have thought the trimming is out would raise the bow.

Another thing to consider is weight distribution. Try moving the fuel tank all the way forward. Along these lines, what type of dingy and engine do you have? A friend of mine put a heavy four stroke on the back of a short and light dingy and suffers from a significant bow up attitude.

I don't think adding the foil will do much to correct your specific problem. They are usually designed to get you up on plane quicker. I took mine off, as I didn't need help getting to plane, and the foil took a little off the top end.

Paul,
I tried it both ways - and (at least in my case) pulling it away from the transom provided the solution. However I have an air floor so I really have very limited weight in the boat itself. The 3 gallon fuel tank doesn't provide that much ballast (allthough I do!). I was surprised myself as you would think that it should raise the bow. - Jeff

I added the foils yesterday and its seems to help. The dingy runs well with just me, once you add another adult so so fast.

What size dingy and what type of foils?

I have a 9'6" dinghy and I installed DAVIS INSTRUMENTS

What motor?

I used these on my dinghy, they are removable and improved performance tremendously. With a 6 HP engine, I was able to get my 310 Airdeck on plane with four adults on board. It also improved the stability in roll.

I found them easy to install, easy to adjust and remove, and beats the heck out of an hydrofoil, plus you don't have to drill holes in your engine. I'd highly recommend checking them out.
Did you have any problems with the turning radius of the outboard engine with these? It looks like they are pretty wide. I have stainless trim tabs with a pressurized cylinder and I've already replaced them 2 times in 2 years. The cylinders don't last.

I didn't...the engine cavitation plate was below the tabs, and even when raised, it didn't touch them. In the image below, you can see the starboard tab, and the tip of the port tab, sort of anyway.

Thanks. Those sure look like they would do the trick.
I have a 11' noverania with a 30 hsp. Yamaha 4 stroke. It has the center console with the main seat behind it. When I accelerate it almost swamps the engine. To get it to plane I have to virtually get in front of the console which is dangerous.
Were these hard to dial in?

I had to put hydrofoils on the bottom of the boat after I added nitros. Now I cruise at 50 in the dighy.

I put them on my 30HP honda which is also on a center console 11 footer+-. Even with the power trim all the way in I still have to learn forward to get on plane if I'm by myself. Unforunately when you design a short center console or anything else this short and then put the D-m gas tank and battery in theback of the boat with the motor you'll always propbably with one on board get up and put some weight forward. The mass of the _ss along with all the built in weight makes it a good looking design tender but not the best balanced. I even changed to a four blade prop with less travel to give her somemore get up and go which did help but you have to make sure you're not under prop at WOT as well.
