I'm just now joining the 20th century and buying a smart phone. We have Verizon, and I'm thinking of buying the I-phone. The Verizon dealer said the Droid was better???

Which phone do you all think is better, especially from a boating perspective for those of us who mostly boat on the Potomac/Chesapeake???

Also, what are some of the smart phone 3G boating-specific Apps you all think are good (either free or for $).

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I like my Droid with the navionics charting software and Verizon.
I think it's a tossup, IPhone or Droid, ie blond or brunette kind of thing.

I use Navionics HD British Columbia for the Puget Sound area on my iPhone ($5.95) and iPad ($30) and they are both well worth it. $30 for portable charting on the iPad is a steal compared to the typical costs of hardwired chartplotters and map cards.

As stated... its blond verses brunette.

I would wait till June/July for the new verizon Iphone. That one MAY be able to talk and search at the same time. The current one does not. Also, as stated, many more apps for ATT Iphone then the Verizon one at the present time.

heard good things about Droid however, I become suspect when they need to give one away when you buy one... Not a great way to make a buck unless that is the only way they can compete... I know when Droid first showed up, they were priced same as ATT IPhone but not any more... I can read between the lines on that one. In addition, ATT IPhone uses a team to approve every single app for the IPhone. Droid does not and as a consequence, there have been many reports of stealing personal data off Droids and the apps vice ATT. Google that and don't be too surprised.

I don't know but would assume the Verizon IPhone also has a team that approves the apps before they are available to Joe Public...

So just a couple of thoughts... either way you go... welcome to the 21st century... and be sure to do your own research...

i have a HTC Desire for work and an Iphone4 as my personal phone. Iphone 4 has better battery life and is so much more intuitive and easier to use!
My htc is a PITA!
But iphone's have been out longer and is more refined. Android will get there but it isnt there at the moment!

Here's something I haven't seen for the droids

Case/battery. extends the life by about 60%. A must have if you are running GPS on the phone for a long time. Mofie air juice.

I didn't know is was compatible with the ipad as well. If I buy for the iPad would I be able to move to an iphone when I finally make that move?

Yes, it is compatible with the iPad and yes, you should be able to transfer your data to the iPhone. We don't support syncing of data between devices or transferring but your data will be transferred if switch iPhones or go from a Touch to iPhone...this is done via iTunes and I assume it will work for the iPad-to-iPhone scenario but I haven't tried it.

WE don't support.... Do you work for Apple?

No, I don't work for Apple. As wish2fish noted, I'm the designer/developer of Boating Suite for the "i" devices. "We" refers to me (the designer) and my developer. When I said that we don't support syncing of data between devices or transferring, I meant that our app doesn't support it -- not the iPhone/iPad.

Just wanted to add that a droid has a hotspot with the iPhone currently does not have. You can connect up to 5 wireless devices to the hotspot on the droid. My neighbors in the marina love me. I also have an iPad which I do connect through the hotspot. I love my Droid HTC.

Verizon iPhone offers this functionality as well.

Another vote for blond vs brunette. Most folks will side with which phone/format they currently own or are used to. I went with the Droid-X by a vary slim margin but would have been happy with the I-phone. I'm not a big fan of the proprietary nature of many Apple devices, but the wife's I-pad is one cool toy.
