Anyone know if the external speaker plays all audio or is it just for the paging and fog horn? Does the remote speaker work in addition to the handheld speaker?

Is an external speaker needed? Seems like handheld wouldn’t be very loud.
Any comments in general?

I cannot find any instructions that shows my Icom can tie into an external speaker for the VHF Communication. Mine does tie into a Horn and Loud Speaker though.

I had had one with the external speaker and two without. The external speaker played all the audio. My last boat had just the hand held mike speaker which I came to prefer. At cruise with the external speaker i needed to turn the volume up very high to hear what callers were saying. I was forever turning it down when getting blasted, ( think police boat speaker levels) having forgotten to reduce volume when coming off cruise. I can actually hear transmissions better by holding the mike speaker up to my ear at cruise. You need to keep volume just high enough to hear your calling name, pan pans, securitees, etc. When someone gets your attentiaon you can adjust mike volume so you can hear them clearly when holding the mike closer to your ear. It really get down to personal preference and hearing acuity.

I have the Icom 400bb and do not need an external speaker, it is plenty loud. This is on a 420 Sundancer.
