I'm thinking/wondering the same thing. Virtually no search results on 500's. Anyone know why?

Thanks guys. I enjoyed reading a bunch of threads on these boats, mostly yours Steve :)

Steve, may I ask a couple of quick questions?

Now that you've had your boat for a while, how pleased are you overall with the Detroit Diesels? For the vintage I'm looking at those are the most common, with some CAT 3196's as well. I've done a bunch of reading, am somewhat familiar with the issues, just curious what your opinion is now that you've been using DD's.

Regarding your wood floor project in your salon...maybe a dumb question but is the wood flooring glued, nailed, or floating to the subfloor?

Regarding your PlasDeck....looks awesome on your boat! Now that you've used it, do you find that it gets too hot for bare feet on a warm day?

Have you had any water penetration issues?

Thanks again!

I can answer some engine questions. Early Detroits are pretty reliable, it's the later versions that are known as DDEC's are trouble. They have been over tuned for more power, and seem not to last very well. We have about 2500 hrs on ours, with no real issues. There are 3 generations of aftercoolers on the Cat 3196s. If looking at one with Cats, make sure they are the 3rd generation. They still need to be serviced every few years $$$$. Check with Cat marine dealer for more info.

Going to look at a 2000 510DA tomorrow. Just kicking the tires (I think). It has 3406E CATs so if it's in good shape, my foot may get stuck to the tire. It's tough since my boat is a great size to use on our delta where we normally boat but the 510DA is one of my favorite designs! This has been on the market for at least 6 months so I am curious what the condition is.

I really like the 510, much higher gunnels, looks much larger.

Awesome boat. I've looked at it online numerous times and talked to Rob Newman about it. Looks to be very clean. There is a problem with one of the cylinders on the hydraulic platform, not a big deal I'm sure he'll tell you about it. If my budget could swing it I'd get one of these 510's but I'm a mere mortal :) Let us know what it's like!

Had my boat in the channel when I noticed an email from Rob. The boat is in Richmond on the hard for some repairs. Bottom paint , hydraulic swim platform reports, etc. I know what number it will take and am surprised she has had only one offer that I know of. I have to look at it so I'll be back!

I'm in.Is this the official 50 thread?

Beginning to look that way. Now we need some questions to answer. Great boats, we have had ours for 10 years, and still love it.

Sounds like fun to me. If we need questions to answer I have lots :) If anyone is interested, I asked a few questions on this thread (page 1) that are still open. cheers.

I'm not on here much but I have a '93 500DA with <700hrs on 6V92s. Been going back and forth about selling. I don't get much time to enjoy it anymore.

Hey Brian, Steve here. I am at Cedar Creek Marina also. I have the boat a few down from you. 96 500 dancer "Size Matters" let me know if you decide to sell, i may have some people that may be interested.
