NYC now reports new hospital admission rates decreasing.

Michigan reporting 50% drop in new cases reported.

Illinois reports it’s in peak of curve right now.

There are over 70 COVID-19 vaccines in clinical trials with two being developed in the US.

Economy can be “phased” in across certain regions and industries in the US.

No ventilator rationing occurred. No hospitals have been overrun.
No life/death decisions made due to resource availability.

Fatality rates far lower than worst feared models due to early quarantine.

20% national unemployment
30% unemployment in NYC

Up to 50% of positive tested patients experience no symptoms.

Google and Apple collaboration to auto-sync Android and iPhone smartphones of any positive patients to track/map contact with others. Some argue violates civil privacy rights.

Federal health agencies to begin disease surveillance via digital tokens in smartphone OS. This is why your name and cellphone number are the only demographic information asked in drive-thru testing tents.

As with post 9/11 many “freedoms” may be lost in the name of “public health” just as with “security against terrorism”.

If we want our country back we must take steps to normalize our economy.

The one thing I believe there’s a legitimate risk for is the lack of operating capital for small businesses.

The stimulus was aimed at paying your employees however when we reopen it’ll take new cash to sustain ops till the demand returns.

I believe this will be true for many industries not just travel and leisure but for example the healthcare industry. Most all other doctor visits and hospital admissions for other procedures have been cancelled.

I think there’s another stimulus in the near future to inject cash into small businesses.

Gov Abbott (TX) is starting to reopen Texas this week.
I was surprised to hear this as Texas is modeled to peak in two weeks... maybe they are talking about remote areas
All models show us in Indiana have peaked a couple days ago....yet the hospital is telling all employees they will peak next week
At least we are talking about peaking and opening....far cry from where we were a couple weeks ago

The Texas opening will start in stages. Texas is a huge state, and in the areas outside of Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and El Paso have been largely unaffected. Even in the metropolitan areas for the most part it's being controlled.

I live in TX, have not heard details of the "re-opening".

The Governor is holding a news conference later today to talk about plans for a small business initiative, no re-opening.

Was thinking I heard over the weekend that there will be discussion on Tuesday around reopening thoughts.

"Reopening Texas businesses in a way that will be safe for that economic revitalization. We will focus on protecting lives while restoring livelihoods. We can and we must do this, we can do both," Abbott said during a news conference Friday. "Expand and restore the livelihoods that Texans want to have by helping them return to work. One thing about Texas, they so much enjoy working. And I know they want to get back into the workforce but we have to articulate also the strategies about ways we can do this safely."

I understand. Just clarifying for those in other parts of the country.

The conversation is starting about re-opening. The previous post said the re-opening was started. Just clarifying... Shelter in place is still in place in Texas until early May.

Overall I feel good about how the Governor in Texas and the county I live in has handled the situation.

Good to see a gubberment official that understands we can walk and chew gum at the same time

I don't want VA to rush it but damn it had better come soon.

And those SBA loans for small businesses, they must not be for non minority, male owned small business. My loan paperwork went in the day they approved the first package. All I've seen is a loan application ID number. Payroll plan was a pure joke. I didn't have a big payroll and the intrest on my truck and house could not be included, even tho the gov says it can.

Can't wait to see where all these supposed funds really went to... Which banks went out and got new Lear jets, which hospital gets whole new wings, which Healthcare insurance company executives get massive fat bonuses

All on the backs of the small businesses and those who put themselves in harms way

VA won't be expanding any hospitals, adding any beds, adding more doctors without the Governments approval. VA has Certification of Needs laws like NY, which limits hospitals.o_O

Ollie, he means Virginia (VA) not Veterans Affairs. M

Sorry Oilie, yes Virginia...not the Veterans Administration

And Susan I hope that didn't offend, I don't see to many minority owned small businesses. All small businesses are pretty much equill these days, it's just the way big business and the government want to treat us.

I can be the lowest bid to do a job and will still be passed over by the highest bidder because that group is supposedly owned by a female or other minority. Most times it's only owned like that on paper.

Most banks where overwhelmed with applications. There where many questions they had for the SBA regarding certification of the small businesses applications. My bank, as did many others, didn't start submitting applications until Wed. last week. And yes, the SBA didn't follow the legislation -- they only allowed a loan based on payroll costs even though the legislation was much broader.

I'm in VA as well. Submitted my application last Monday; my bank has been good about updating progress. My application made it out of the bank to SBA on Wednesday. It cleared the SBA on Saturday. The bank says it will now take a few days for the loan papers to be generated (looks like that part didn't get automated) then I will sign and the funds will be disbursed.
The loan is based on documented average monthly payroll. That amount is multiplied by 2.5 (even though the "test" period is only two months) to get to the loan amount. The loan is "forgiven" if the business' payroll is at least equal to the previous average (X2), headcount is not reduced and the remainder is used for mortgage, rent and utilities. So, no need to include anything other than payroll up front, it just will need to be justified when the time comes. Worst case, to the extent there are any unforgiven amounts is a 1% loan with no payments for 6 months and 2 years to clear.

EDIT: I meant to mention that the start date of the loan needs to be carefully considered and should be negotiable with the bank. Unless your business is ongoing or you want to pay your folks for doing nothing (which is actually in keeping with the intent of the law), the date needs to be on or about the time you think (guess) you will start operations. The "test" starts on the loan date so if you aren't going to have any payroll at start you will fall behind on the conditions for forgiveness. Especially if your employees are at least as well or better off on Unemployment, you probably want to start the clock later rather than sooner.
