Very cool.... That might be something special as it sounds like there will be no water in that lake soon.

That is what the national news would like the world to think and the group that wants to take the dam down.

Plenty of water at the lake.... yes it is down year over year and yes the west is in a ten year drought and really the low level of the lake was brought on from water rights that were written 25 years ago to send water to the lower lakes. These rules were made when the west was in high water years and they never adjusted them as snowpack changed year over year. Also the demand for water to the lower basin .. nevada, California is due to population and there misuse of water.

The pic where my boat is has 100 feet of water under the boat. The main channel average is around 220 feet. The lake has 1200 miles of shore line.

The issue with the low water are where the marinas are located. Both ends of the lake the marinas are on natural plateau so they have become shallow. At the north end of the lake they have a plan to move the marina to deeper water.
This year's run off we will see around 30 feet and by october the lake will only have about 10 feet of the 30.

Park service has been slow to approved the permits for contractors to improve the launch ramps and to move the marinas.

I guess the lake could go away and might one day however there is water!

Ahhhh, yes, the truth emerges. JC, are you suggesting that those news articles about the lake being almost dry are....fake news?

Always nice to have a true perspective from someone who's actually on the scene.

Thanks.

Maybe no so much fake news as gloom and doom from the groups that want to see the dam taken down... lots of social media on that kind of shit. On top of that we all know when something is bad that makes for good news.

The lake is down there is no arguing that.

176 feet down from full pool at 3700 feet.By content, Lake Powell is 23.95% of Full Pool (24,322,000 af)
What they don't say is it will never get that full again. Full pool was in 1983-1985 and that was a super wet year in Utah and Colorado.

They will not let the lake get past 3650. The question is will the west get that kind of snow pack again. Who knows!

The lake is down 37 feet from this time last year and that will change in the next 45 days. Just this weekend we saw it come up six inches. Now that doesn't sound like a lot but when it is covering this kind of area six inches is a lot of water. There is currently 1,898,338,086,337 gallons of water in Lake Powell!

If we can get the lake to 3550 that is the start of the sweet spot. If we could get to 3600 after run off and hold that for the summer months that would be prime!

Right now we are at 3523.

Could the dam come down who knows! The upper and lower basin are working together more than ever. This isn't about just one lake it involves 9 lakes total.

For those of you interested here is a great link that shows you all the info you would ever want to know about the lakes that feed the Colorado river.

Great pics, amazing. I was thinking about you when I first read/heard about the lake's low water. Glad to see you can still boat.

Great pics but I have to ask why your vhf antennas are angled back?

I had to angle mine almost flat to get under the roof of my slip. If we were taking off on a long trip I'd raise them as soon as we cleared the slip.
I had mine on our 260 straight up, and I broke it backing into the slip. It hit on the sprinkler main line. I leave it angled all the time now.

Stunning pictures, JC. Just beautiful. I have had a fascination with Powell ever since I saw a show on the Travel channel 20+ years ago featuring a group that rented a house boat and run about for a week. The show followed them for the entire week and the scenery was incredible, just like your pictures. Now that the kids are adults and I have taught them to drive boats, I might be a good fall family vacation.

Highslice,
You can't go wrong with a week at Lake Powell. Renting a houseboat is the best way to see the lake and you can easily take 12 people comfortably on a 75ft houseboat . If you don't want to cover the expense on your own add in one other family that knows boating and will be a good time together.

Most years they offer in Jan- Feb 50% off for summer rentals if you book the trip as a non refundable trip. Best time to see the lake is September to the 2nd week of October. Lake temps are still in the high 80 and day temps dont break 95.

Most people coming from out of state rent a boat out of the south end " Page AZ" Page has everything you need in the way of hotels , grocery stores etc.

When renting out of the south end you need to travel about 15 miles north or more to really get the powell experience. 15 miles or more north gets you away from the crowds and in a more scenic part of the lake. You then can take a run about and day trip each day to really see the lake.

If you really get the itch and pull the trigger on doing a trip. Just get ahold of me and I can walk you through all that you will need to do to make it a great trip.

Does that mean I shouldnt go on the week of the 4th lol. Glad you spoke up about the levels I’m like you spend a lot of time in powell it the best lake ever
