Howdy Folks,

Very long time boater, was looking for a project to do while I wait for all this snow to melt. I decided to take it to the next level and make a silly Youtube channel to document the experience and all the other wacky vehicle stuff I do. So long story short;

I spent the last two weeks buying as many small outboard motors off Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. My criteria was as follows;

-Not running, will not start, etc.
-60 miles from Boston was the search radius
-If the motor was under $100, I just bought it
-If the motor was over $100, I offered half and if anyone said yes I bought it.

I ended up with twelve random outboards and just posted my second video last night. Once I am done with this outboard project, I already bought a 20’ $300 boat (cheapest “ran when parked” boat within 30 miles) and hauled it home. I don’t think I can post a link (I will try) to my Youtube channel, but if you go to Youtube and search for, “Parts Cannon Garage” that is my new channel name.

I have no idea what I am doing so I could use all the help I can get. If you are bored, check it out and if I am doing something stupid please let me know.

Thank you folks and happy boating!

So we now know how to make a stand. See channels like this on you tube all the time. If you are doing it to just get a piece of the YouTube pie chances are it will fail. What I see right off is a channel that the host admits he doesn't know what he's doing . Channel that use this concept usually flop. People don't want to watch someone fumble around with zero content. Number two go out and buy a at least a $200 audio mike because you sound like your in a tin bucket. If you are going to do something you better explain why or people will get bored watching someone build something at condensed speed. Your audience I think you are shooting for has zero skill so you better be explaining why you are doing something. If they don't benefit they won't watch your channel.No one wants to see some one wing it unless you are going to show them what mistakes you made then show how you fixed them. Right now the giant white board in the back ground is distracting what you are doing. Oh I almost forgot the personality is 99.9% of the reason a YouTube channel is popular.

Just this morning i watch guy shooting a pistol i have a Gun broker bid on. Camera not working great, bad audio, boring guy. Obviously not proficient with the pistol. Turned it off half way thru.
Want to see it done right? Check out Larry Lawton. Did 12 years in prison. Great stories, highly entertaining!

Can you send a link to your channel? I think a lot of your advice is sound, some of it just sounds like a cranky old man… either way, I appreciate all feedback.

I know a ton about boating but not much about repairing broken outboards, I should prob explain my boat resume a bit more. I do three or four big boat projects a year and I should have been filming everything so people could benefit. I am going for a delicate balance between entertaining content and useful content. Looking forward to checking out your channel for some ideas.

Yeah, looks kind of spammy to me.

I think of spammy as some poorly google translated non specific text. I intentionally tried to be very specific so you would know I was not a bot or anything. How could message sound less spammy? If you felt that way, others might too and I would like to get better.

I think its kinda cool what you doing. Making a Frankenmotor. Pieces parts from different engines. I have a buddy did that with Harleys. It was ‘unique’ to say the least. Had a house light switch under the tank as a starter. Go for it.

Nice chippy response that's cool I get . You shared a link were you admit to having a previous flopped channel . Quit with the overhead shots you lose perspective when you do that. People like to see their host eye to eye unless you need to do that for a shot. If your talking look directly into the camera not up at it. Cranky or not remember if someone takes the time to make constructive remarks then you should at least listen to them and move on you don't have to agree with all of them and don't go on the defensive. Remember Old has never been a bad thing but being closed minded is.

We called it the Thunder Chicken. Gas tank was strapped on with bungie cord. Was going down road behind him one day with a group. Some part fell off and bounced past me. When we got to our destination I told him. He said, Bike running fine, obviously I didn’t need it. We never did figure out what fell off.

I share your affliction, but I'm a little more thrifty than you. My standard price is 20 bucks, but I admit to spending 30 for a couple that were particularly rare. And of course, the 2 twin Rowboat motors in the front right of the pic cost a couple hundred each. But they are both over 100 years old, and both are runners.

Your stand is nice, but if you truly want to collect, you need individual metal stands that match the motor's manufacturer. Hard to find, but they are out there.

I got my first motor in 1965, but really didn't start collecting in earnest until 2005.

I only posted a couple pics. It would take a few more to get them all in.

Half the fun is the search. The mechanical work to get them running really isn't too hard. The cosmetic restoration takes finesse and getting period correct decals adds to the fun.

You my friend, are my hero, I want to live amongst those engines. Thank you for sharing, I saved a few photos so I can aspire to your level.

LOL, all of your advice is sound and appreciated, I just bought a “Gimbal” to hold my phone while recording, as opposed to
me leaning it on books etc. My audio quality sucks, and most of my latest video was recording before I tried to improve a few things, I am hoping video 4 will be cleaner,
faster and I will really work on the eye contact. It is so much harder to explain what you are doing while doing it for the first time, I might practice a fake shot before the real one so I am not fumbling for tools, etc.

Just “dropped” video 3 if you are REALLY BORED

Thanks for sharing...looking forward to more.

Scott

Thank you Scott, I might get yelled at by someone for posting a link; but I just released my latest video and decided to add some “acting” to the beginning, watch the first minute and let me know how stupid it is lol.
