Late 90's 270 Sundancer Thread

I have 21s which provide better ability to get on plane than the 23s. The 23s will run faster for me but it is rare that I run at anywhere close to WOT. Somewhere I think I have a thread where I posted all my numbers with both the 21 and 23s but it is hard to find from the phone.

In fact I have a set of 23s for sale if you are interested.

I have 22s but Lone, notice he has a bravo two, not three like us. Normally at 4400 I hit 38-40 mph. I think I cruise at around 3400 at 26 mph

My bad. I did not notice the B2.

Also I must have been sleeping at the wheel because I also have 22s (replaced 24s); I do not have 21s. Sorry.

Okay - finally had a chance to test at WOT. 1/4 tank of gas, 1/4 fresh water and only 2 people on a fairly calm lake. 4600 max RPM gave me about 33mph. I also pulled the prop and learned it was a 21 pitch. I know the OEM is a 23 pitch 17.5 prop. I am leaning towards getting the stock sized prop and try it. I just wonder why the PO had TWO (primary and spare) 21 pitch props. Something must have made him favor the lower pitch prop.

Any thoughts on why a 23 is not ideal? Are you guys running 23's?

That seems pretty normal. 4600 is right at the top of the range for that engine and is exactly where you should be. If you switch to 23" props, your WOT will be closer to 4200. While you may get a little more speed at similar RPMs - the engine will be working harder and you will find it harder to get on a plane when the boat is loaded with more passengers/gear.

I would keep the 21s on.

I have completed several updates or additions to my 270 over this past winter and spring. I have posted about some of them already but I have several that I have posted nothing about. If anyone wants to see pictures or narratives about the following projects just put a post and I will try to get something up. I may post some of them anyway even if no one requests. I will snap some pictures this weekend or next week.

Added a cheap suction mounted shower wand holder to the head - cheap but works great.
Added battery operated LED strip lights to bimini http://www.seasense.com/products/30/flypage/details/2371
Changed almost all bulbs on boat to LEDs
Added LED light under cabinet in galley.
Added LED strip lighting surrounding hatch into bilge (nice and bright with no shadows).

I still have a few projects for next year that I am not sure which if any I will do:

Get a real innerspring mattress for the V berth and remove the surrounding bolsters to enlarge the effective area of the V berth (I never use mine as a table area).
Add fuel flow meter.
Add tank monitor to water and holding tank.
Larger trim tabs.
Patch a few cosmetic gel coat dings.
Add shelf to the storage area starboard aft cockpit and to one of the hanging closets in the cabin.
Replace main 30 amp circuit breaker with an Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter.

I have toyed with adding GPS but I know my boating area better than the charts now so I am not sure it would be really useful. The reason I think I might is I could use something like Garmin's 740 to act as a multifunction display to display fuel flow data and tank data. Otherwise I will have to get something like the lowrance LMF-400.

Suggestions for fire extinguisher location.

My fire extinguisher in the cockpit used to be mounted to the right of the captain's seat at the helm. I removed it and mounted my subwoofer in that location. I have not yet found a space to remount the fire extinguisher that is reasonably accessible and aesthetically pleasing. Any ideas? I know pictures would be nice. This is where it used to be located:

John:

Your boat is fantastic with all the changes you have made. An obvious labor of love.

I am going to replace my anchor, chain and rode. I am going to get the Danforth model and was wondering how much chain you all normally use and the weight of the anchor and the length of the rode? I gather there are two types of Danforth models, the standard and Tensile (I am in the Destin, Florida area where the anchoring parts of the bay are from 4 to about 15 feet of sandy bottom).

The Tensile model looks like it has a longer shaft, so anyone on here with this model, if you could do it all over which one would you get and how heavy?

I obviously have a windless! LOL

I am going for stainless as the simple fact is, as my wife likes to say, sometimes I have more money than brains "but look how sharpe it looks honey!"

I would think 30 feet of chain, and 100 to 125 feet of rode would be sufficient.

Not sure about the anchor weight at all....

Thanks for the comments on the boat. I only have just a few more projects to make it "mine".

http://www.fortressanchors.com/safe_anchoring.html

The page above answers most of your questions. I have a guardian that is made by fortress as my back up anchor. It is the equivalent of the fx11 which is a 7 pound anchor. My main anchor is the stock sea ray delta type anchor - not sure of the weight. I have 15 feet chain and 150 feet of rope. Some will tell you to get an all chain rode. I disagree for the reasons pointed out on fortress's info page. A nylon rope as part of the rode provides shock absorbency to the anchor system.

Wow you were busy! I am interested about these if you do post pics.

This might be a "loaded" question, considering this is a 270 thread, but hopefully I can get some input from you guys. Looks like my 220 Sundancer is sold, or at least I have a deposit. I originally was thinking of moving up to a 280, but a single engine '02 or newer at a good price is almost impossible to find. The 270 pretty much fits the bill for me, but I was wondering on the differences that one foot length and wider beam of the 280 makes. Has anyone owned a 280, or been on one enough to give me a good comparison of the two boats. I like the extra cockpit area on the 270, and the extra space due to no sink setup (which I pretty much think is a waste of floor space), and I don't really need a radar arch. Are there any other advantages of the 280, other than size? Thanks for any input on this....

I have never owned a 280 nor been on one. In general a wider beam gets a lot more bang for your buck than a longer boat.

Obviously I am biased but for my purposes the 270 is perfect. I can sleep all four of the family for up to a week at a time comfortably. The 270 with a single engine is easy to operate. It is cheap to maintain and to operate compared to a larger 2 engine boat. If I was to go on an extended cruise I would want a real bed and able to use the potty without my knees hitting the door. My favorite thing about the 270 is the aft facing port side lounger. The 290 is the only other boat I know with the same cockpit layout but with the 290 i think you would need two engines.

Yes, that is what attracted me to the 270. The 280 has a similar lounge seat, but it's smaller, and can't be used quite the same was as the 270's seat. Other than that, and the missing radar arch, they appear very similar. I've been on a couple of 280's, but never on a 270. I'd like to be able to compare the cabin size, and head size. Too bad there aren't exact measurements of each compartment online. Thanks for the info though.

There was an aluminum arch available. In the above thread you can see the name of the fabricator of the original. I have not contacted them to see if you can get one from them though.

I am prejudice too, but our 270's actually are 30 feet long. I did not want the extra sink especially since the boat already has two! I have not been on a 280 so I cant compare but as most of my posts will read, I love my boat.

I suspect it is because I posted that one on the club level that you have to be a paid member to have access.
