The bottom of my boat is in lousy shape. I purchased the boat mid summer last year and knew that I would need to re-do the bottom at some point and would like to do it b/f I splash this year.

Have any of my fellow Long Islanders done this b/f and if so, please share your recommendations for someone in the Long Island area.

I believe there is a company that does Farrow Blasting in that area. Far less damage to the gel coat tha soda blast and leaves the bottom ready for paint or barrier coat if you choose to go that root.

Thanks. I have found a few companies via a google search. However I’m hoping to get a recommendation from someone who’s actualy seen results from a local vendor /blaster.

I know that it’s not rocket science. However I also know that in experienced hands, a lot can go wrong during this process.

I used Vinnie from Restora Blast last year. Did a great job. Price was reasonable and in range with others. He used a very fine recycled glass media.

He just did my Uncle’s 22’ fishing boat today. I stopped by for a minute right after he got started, but had to leave. Took a quick look at it this afternoon and it looks like he did a nice job. He left the area around the boat nice and clean too, like he was never there.

I was not able to be on site when he did my job but he sent pics along the way. Very easy to work with - I would use him again.

The only wrinkle in the job - and not his fault at all - was he couldn’t get to the bottom paint blocked by the boat stands. He was not about to go moving the boat supports which is reasonable. I used a heavy duty bottle jack to raise the boat enough to relocate the supports and sand the patches of remaining bottom paint.

This is helpful. I appreciate the feedback.

I can understand him not wanting to move any boat stands or anything that’s supporting the boat.

Do you recall if he charged you for your LOA or your waterline leingth. I appreciate all the feedback it is helpful.

I told him the length of boat (loa) and beam and sent a couple photos. He estimated on that info. Price was comparable with other lower end estimates.

I’m going to do the same for my Uncle on his boat. He’s 86 years old, so I do the lion’s share of the maintenance for him. Only fair since I use that boat a lot more than he does anyway. Unfortunately, I couldn’t hang around because I took advantage of the good weather to get some stuff done on my boat, but my uncle was there the whole time with him and he’s very happy.

That’s what I did too and his price was exactly the same as another company we checked with.

JVM and Brad, I’m expecting this to be between $40 and $50 per foot. Dose that seem accurate/realistic?

To expand on my earlier reply, I found my notes from last year. The quote was for $1200. For a 27' boat that works out to $44/foot.

Another company gave me the exact same quote and a 3rd company quoted $2100. Based on phone conversations I felt more comfortable with Vinnie.

I don't really know how they calculate their charges. It could be by length, or by square footage since they asked for beam + length + type of boat. I'd expect the actual time and blasting media consumption is more a function of area, so a wider boat takes more of both as would a draft displacement hull.

Brad, thanks for the feedback. I agree with you that the L x W x D are probably more of a factor than just the LOA.

All good point and very helpful for me to use as a starting point.

Not sure exactly how close this is to Long Island, but there is often heavy duty "media blasting" at Trump tower... LOL

It is winter still since I see snow...

MM

LOL.
