Lord save me, the hunt continues. AND THE HUNT ENDS (I hope)

Last year we decided to move up the boating scale, adding a cruiser to our "fleet". We finally settled on the 28-29 foot range, and almost bought a '99 Monterey 296. Then stuff happened and we had to put things on hold.

It's off hold now. I love my wife, and she is just as enthusiastic about getting the boat as I am, and we have the same priorities for the boat. But I'm fighting against "it". As in "I know it when I see it", and "that's not it". I've bounced every reasonable make/model/size combination off of her trying to find "it". Sometimes she will look at two boats of the same make/model/year/features, and say "this one is close", but the other one "is not even close". But no specific reasons why.

I'm beginning to wonder what a bullet would taste like.

So today I took her to a broker yard so we can look at a number of boats in the size range, and she could get a feel for them. Guess what she liked. She liked the Bayliner 305. Can I get salt for that bullet? Maybe ketchup?

We did look at Sea Rays, but most of them were out of our price range, and neither of us is a fan of the 290 layout. But after the Bayliner incident, I figured it was time for a hail-mary pass. I looked around some more, expanded the price criteria a bit, and found several 2000 310's that looked promising. I sent her the info, and waited for the "that's not it".

"I like it"

The heavens parted, the angels wept, and a bullet was spared a short but messy trip through my cranium.

So, we are now officially looking for a 2000 era 310 ('99-'02, if I remember the model breakouts properly). I've started reading the 310 thread, but there's a LOT to chew through. We would prefer outdrives, as I intend to dry-rack the boat when not in use, and like the performance/economy gains.

What should I be looking out for? What are the pitfalls of the 310's of this era? How prevalent are the head-gasket/water ingestion issues in the 5.7's of that era (most likely what we will end up with). Any relevant advice would be most welcome.

Lord what a weekend. I sent her links to several 310's that seemed decent after I made that post, and around 1 AM she said "This one!". We discussed it, reviewing several other boats just for comparison, and she was certain, and I like the boat too.

So, bright and early Saturday I get in the car and drive to New Jersey to look at a 310. I like it, discuss it with her, and we make an offer.

Today I got the call that the offer was (after an obligatory counter-offer) accepted. I don't think it gets any faster than that unless you walk into a showroom with cash.

Time to line up the survey and sea trial.
 
That is a great boat. Very nice riding and handling. A friend of mine had a 310 and a 340 of the same year and claimed the 310 handled better. I think it has a sharper dead rise. I started looking at the 310 and we ended up at a 340. Went through a similar nightmare when picking our boat out. I have to add though there was never talk of a bayliner
 
The Bayliner was mostly about the cabin layout and use of space. It was one of the few boats where the V berth would sleep both of us comfortably, without overcrowding. Even the 310 we have picked will be tighter.

But I think we came to a good decision, and can't wait to sea trial her.

And the boat, too.

Please make sure it isn't a Post Sandy restore boat. Just go through it carefully and ask for the history. I have seen some boats that I know where totaled by Sandy up here yet selling as "Almost Perfect Condition".
 
350 Mags and 6.2L smallblocks are great motors. I have a 350 in my CV-23. My 454 in the 270DA is a very thirsty motor. Both fired up perfect yesterday on the hose, Mike.
 
It's not a Sandy boat - they have stated that explicitly. It was on blocks at the boatyard last year, 20+ miles from the coast and 118' above sea level. There's no visible damage or repairs to the hull/exterior/canvas, and it has old bottom paint (will have to renew ASAP), so there's no "cover-up" of hull repairs.

Of course, the Surveyor and Mechanic will be ensuring the claims are true.
 
Wasn't there something with the late 90s early 00s 310s about water ingestion with the exhaust system???
 
I've seen some reports on that, but only in regards to the 5.0's or 5.7's. I haven't seen anyone report it on 7.4's yet. I also saw another series of posts that said it was V-drives only, not outdrives.

But so far the gist of what I've seen is that it has happened more than expected, and everything else is indeterminate. I would love to find solid info on it. I will be having the compression checked in any case.
 
The 1999-2002 310's are awesome boats imo. I recently purchased a 2000-310 after months of research about them. The water ingestion problem is not so common as you might think.As long as the past owners addressed the issue immediately,mods could be done to fix the potential issue. I just finished a haul-out and 2 weeks of washing ,polishing ,painting ,etc and the boat is pristine. All maintenance has been complete and up to date. The layout is very user friendly and the reason I bought it. I looked at newer 310,320's and found the cockpit flow more restrictive. Less beam equals more of a crampy feeling. imo.and that's why I bought the 2000. I think you will love your boat.
 
That's a funny post, My wife's criteria was that it have the "eye shaped windows" - You just never know what's going on in there.

Everyone gave me the "two best days" line when I bought the 175. Yeah, it was a MUCH smaller check, but I haven't regretted it for a minute, and still plan to get plenty of enjoyment out of it. But this new boat, knock on wood, is a life choice. This is where we want to be in 5, 10, 20 years and beyond.
 
Closed on the boat today. They are taking care of a few service items, and then it will be shipped down to me within the next 2/3 weeks. Thanks to everyone for all the advice!
