I know that many of you have lost your four legged best friend, hunting buddy, or boating mate. This afternoon I lost mine. Jake, an 8.5 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever lost his battle with acute liver failure. Jake caught some sort of virus over the weekend and on Monday night started vomiting and had diarrhea. He drank tons of water but wouldn't eat. Tuesday he went to the vet and was put on antibiotics. On Wednesday he started to urinate blood and I knew there was something more serious going on. I took him immediately to the vet hospital and they said his blood work was off the charts for liver failure. We tried everything we could to help Jake fight this but today we lost the battle. The vet called me around noon and said I had better come in right away. I was able to make it there and spend an hour with Jake before we all agreed that there was nothing more we could do. Putting my best buddy down has to be the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. The tears are still flowing as I think about all of the ducks and pheasants that Jake retrieved. How much he loved riding in the boat, the truck and on the four wheeler. Jake has been boating with me since he was 7 weeks old. He would retrieve training dummy's for hours on end and just loved the water.
I know that God has a plan for everyone but this one is pretty hard to figure out. Why can't dogs live longer than ex wives? I just wanted to share this and maybe sharing will help me start the healing process.
For all of you that have a four legged furry buddy sitting by your side, give them a pat on the head for me and tell them how much you love them.
