I got a code on my Smartgauge that said the MAP sensor voltage low. Thinking that the sensor was bad, I replaced it. Several trips later The code returns on the new sensor. So again I replace it. Put the boat in the water and again the same code. Now I am thinking, what are the chances of 3 sensors going bad that fast. I breakout the multimeter and disconnectthe wires from the ECM and the sensor. I find the same color wires on the ECM connector that are on the sensor connector. My meter's probe is too large to fit into the connectors so I get 2 small papwe clips. I push the paper clips into the connectors and check for continuity. None. Looking at the the ends of the connectors, They looked clean and not bent. So now I am tracing wires. I can't find any breaks so I take a step back and start working on a leaking gasket on my wash down pump. Then all of a sudden I think, what else could be keeping me from making contact. Turns out the metal paper clips have a thin clear coating over them. I grab the paper clip with my teeth and pull the coating off. Put the clips back into the connectors and I get a reading. No broken wires. I then push the clips in and out of the connectors over and over again and then plug everything back in. Reconnect the battery and turn the key to run. No code. Now I am jumping upand down but I need to see if it comes back with the engine running. I connect the water, start the engine a let it warm up. I increase the RPMs and wait to see if I get a code. I move the throttle up and down but no code. I turn everything off and check the scanner one last time. Still good. Lesson learned today.. with to days way of doing repairs it is easier just to replace a part than to find and fix the problem. #1 don't just go out and buy a new part without getting down into the problem (Innow have 2 spare MAP sensors) #2 sometime the answer to a problem is to look at your tools (plastic coated paper clip) #3 just because it looks good does not make it good (the connectors needed cleaning).
