Metal-to-metal clicking sound

How many hours on the engine? Inboard or inboard/outboard? 1. Check the oil 2. Inspect the belt(s).

Go to auto parts store and buy a stethoscope, it will help you pinpoint and isolate noise. Lifter, injector, valve, transmission.

Should have started with more info...

Twin V-drives, about 380 hours. Started before annual oil change but noise still there upon start up.

May need another 1/2 qt each to top off oil after but noise is in Starboard.

I’m in a good marina and should be able to get a tech to weigh-in but don’t want to sound like a rookie - which I am.

Thank you for the input.

You say the noise is there 'upon start up', does it go away? How loud is it? Does it change with rpm, or in gear vs neutral? Is it the same when starting a cold engine vs hot? Have you checked v-belts for tension and condition?

Noises descriptions are funny, in my world there's mainly tickin', clickin', knockin', and squealin', I know what they mean but don't know if everyone else would agree.

While cruising a fellow I know heard a 'tapping' sound, he couldn't figure it out until he heard a real racket going on and his strbd engine died. His anchor had come loose and 'banged' it's way down the side of his boat until it wound up in the strbd prop. Last I talked to him he was at about 20K damage and all estimates weren't in. I questioned his description of 'tapping' and he shrugged shoulders and said 'well that's what I call it'.

I'm mainly sharing his story because I always get a kick out of the long distance trouble shooting done on these forums. It's like detective work or something.

Sort of like this bobeast?

LOL perfect! Sounds like he has the same problem. Wonder if it's covered under warranty? Naturally the dealer will have the standard response...."They all do that"

Are you able to run it briefly with the belt off? May help to eliminate the accessories if they are a possibility.
