I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction here.

My father lived on his 1983 (I think) Ericson 36 Flushdeck sailboat on Shelter Island in San Diego bay. He unexpectedly passed away this last April. I'm the executor of his estate and we need to sell the boat as it's costing us $800 a month in slip rental.

The boat is functional and sails but is definitely in need of some work and overdue maintenance. We're not looking to get a fortune out of it, just something reasonable that would get it sold quickly.

Does anyone know a broker in the area that could take in on? Or a good site for listing it? The problem is that none of the children live close to the area so showings and such are going to be a problem. I have a sister in San Marco, CA and I'm in Dallas.

TIA

Sorry about your dad. Forget about selling it yourself. Find a broker who can list it at an "estate sale" price and do the work for you. You also might consider pulling it out of the water if it doesn't sell fast -- probably cheaper to store on land and a lot less can go wrong. You could search Yachtworld for brokers and comparable vessels in the area. Good luck.

You might be better off donating it to "boat angels" or something similar. Tax write off could be more than cash value. Sorry for the loss.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. He certainly seemed to love being on the water .....which you clearly have embraced. Both my parents passed years ago but whenever I'm doing something that they taught me.....I feel close to them again.

Generally you can only deduct the amount the charity sells it for, not some book value as was often done in the past.

Mm

Look up Silver Seas yacht sales. They have an office in San Diego. We used to sell our boat in Sausalito. I think they are honest and pretty diligent as brokers go. I’ve had occasion to deal with the owner of the brokerage and I think he runs a good operation.
Best wishes to you and your family as you unwind your father’s estate. Never an easy task to deal with as inevitable as it is.

Thank you for the kind words. My day always dreamed of getting a sailboat and sailing the world. 10 years ago he was in a position to do it and found this very capable blue water boat. It was in San Diego so he moved on it and prepared for the journey. But before he could leave he found too many friends and pretty ladies and never left :)
