New to CSR and this is my first post. I just purchased a new to me 2005 280 Sundancer with twin MPI 260 up each. My question is what spark plugs do you guys and gals use in your engine or engines. Do any of you run the NGK Laser Iridium ITR4a-15 and if you do how do you like the performance. Any and all answers greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would stick to the tried and true that is listed in your engine manual.

$50 vs $200 for a spark plug change.

Not sure the added cost of using an exotic spark plug will give any benefit to a cruiser boat.

Agreed.

Whether automotive engine or marine engine, I have found it best to use the oem plugs.

Not sure about 2005, but my 2006 280 called for iridiums. Changing the plugs in that boat is no joke and the iridiums will be the last set of plugs he will have to buy. You can find them on line for about 8 bucks each.

I reached out directly to the Mercruiser folks for their latest recommendation (changed from the original recommended plugs). What they sent back for my 4.3MPI was the NGK Iridium:

Michael,
Our spark plug recommendation for this engine is the NGK ITR4A15.
Thanks,
James

+1 in our ‘06 260DA-350 Mag. I found them on eBay for around $7. Cranking and throttle response improved.

Yes I'm using NGK TR55IX (7164) in the 8.1's......and as recommended by the local Merc tech. I had them changed when I bought the boat 3 years ago and still starting and running sweet.

I tried the Iridium in my 496. I saw a noticed a difference in start up can cruising. Just felt much smoother. I have 2 motors and only tried them in one last season. This winter I replaced both. (yes I replaced the ones I just Installed last season also..I just want the same run time on both) They were like $5.50 with the 20% off online at Advanced Auto. When I took the old ones out, they still looked new. Here are a pic of my NGK with only one season. Take a close look at the tip. And the brown hot spot. This is only 40 hrs old/ 1 season.
