Anybody have experience with Noland RS11 data converter (converts tach and analog gauge signals to digital) ? My 1994 tach's are not trustworthy and I would like to utilize garmin 740

Yes I have two of them. Make sure the NEMA 2000 PGN's that the RS11 is converting can be displayed by the Garmin instrument. I initially had two Garmin GMI 10's but they would not read some of the engine and transmission NEMA 2000 PGN's so I had to upgrade to the Garmin GMI 20's. I do know also that the Garmin GPSMAP 7212 will read and display most all NMEA 2000 PGN's.

Oh, and there is an annoiance reading temperature thermisters ( ie engine temperature sensors). Thermisters do not have linear temperature/voltage output. Ever notice that your temperature gauges do not have the numbers spaced equally? The RS11 can only determine linear functions so you would have to pick a linear segment of the thermister's curve that you need to have accuracy and impose that as linear values. So, if you didn't know this in setting up the RS11 you would pick two data points measured (engine cold and engine at operating temperature) and load these in the RS11. The RS11 then draws a straight line between the two values and then displays what the temperature on that line with respect to the voltage measured. Actually there is quite a significant curve between the two points so the RS11's output between the two points will be inaccurate. In discussing this shortcomming with Ken at Noland Engineering they will shortly be releasing a firmware update to accomodate non-linear outputs. They have asked if I would Beta test so we will see....

Thanks for info, I am feeding signals to Garmin 740s. Hope this is a compatible combination.

Ever get anything further on the multi-point calibration?

They never did come through with the change. According to their chief engineer a couple of weeks ago when they released the latest firmware version the algorithm is not yet included but is still in the plan.
