Interesting that it will have John Deere Diesel engines. Don't believe I have seen those in a boat before. However, Deere makes great products, so they are probably very reliable.

Seen a documentary on TV of several Nordhaven boats making a crossing of the Atlantic. It was pretty neat. They are very sea worthy vessels.

Extremely reliable. You have heard of Lugger? Northern lights generators, the mains in most previous Nordhavens, Those Luggers are Deeres. Lugger is not a complete power plant, they are marinizations of existing motors. Most Lugger conversions in mid range motors were Deere. I thought I had heard that Lugger may have stopped operations, so now John Deere it's self is filling that gap.
Defever, as well as other upper shelf trawler manufacturers have been putting Deeres in boats since the early 2000's. There is a Kadey Krogen 52 Expedition at the docks in our condo complex with a pair of 4045's in it and Jeff Siegel who founded Active Captain once owned a 53 Defever Pilot house with a pair of 6068's in it. I actually tried to buy Siegel's boat when it was up for sale a few years ago but I was too late to the party and a few dollars short. Again:(

Funny I was looking at used Nordhaven the other night. For what you are getting, these arent crazy expensive, and very capable.

I was looking at this blog for the MV Dirona. Fun to dream about. Maybe one day...

I really like the Nordhavens entire line. The fit and finish of the whole boat is really nice and their engine rooms are spectacular. The only downside with the single JD was the 9 knot cruise speed. With a 71,000+ lb displacement and 320 total bhp I wonder what this boat will cruise at? 12-13 knots?

Never heard of Luger either. Have seen the Northern Light gennys. I like the use of low HP Diesel engines in these boats. Should run forever. I believe the genny engine can also power the prop on the boat in the event of a main engine failure. Believe they are also plumbed to pump the bilge using the main should that become necessary. Great boat for the trawler market.

Most Nordhavn's are full displacement vessels, no added horsepower is going to get you much above hull speed. Yes technically they will go faster than hull speed but you are beating on the engines at that point unless you are surfing down a wave.

1.35 x the square root of the waterline length in feet = Hull Speed

Not sure of the underbody of this 51 but I doubt it is semi displacement.

Nephew moved to NC, told me don’t matter what car or house you have, if your lawn tractor ain’t John Deere you ain’t shit. They cut right to the simple things down there.

And my Lowe’s version chinese made JD lawn tractor don’t count, they only consider the real down down there :)

Love those boats. If I had chosen a different career path in the '80s, I would buy one.

I didn’t know that about full v. semi displacement hulls. I learn something new everyday on CSR! :) This was also a fun read:https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.powerandmotoryacht.com/.amp/boats/understanding-hull-design
