Yeah I just looked at the pics and I see the difference gen 2 is a lot wider than gen 1 also

Yes that would be the problem! You could rebuild the upper, but you might want to look at the SEI replacement. https://www.sterndrive.cc/Mercruiser-Alpha-One-Gen-II-Upper-Only.html

Is there a way to replace just the gears?

Considering it melted down from lack of/low oil the bearings and seals are gone too, If the oil did not have a metallic look to it the lower may be salvageable .
To rebuild it you need the tools, the knowlege and manual to assemble it correctly. By the time your done a SEI upper makes a lot more economic sense.
The other thing is the teeth when softened and push downward can cut into the case rendering it useles

Not sure what model "roundabout" you have, but does that have the on engine drive lube container? Was it empty?
