Not the second happiest day.....

People who use that expression about the best day in a boaters life..... are always clueless about boats. They also wish they could own one but usually can't afford one. In any case your story is true and heartfelt. I know your "boater's spirit" will always be a part of you! I wish you the best in whatever is next.

I bet there will be hundreds if not thousands of folks joining that crowd come spring time and they come out of their Covid coma and figure out the true cost of owning a boat after six to twelve months!

This is a hard time of year for many boaters, spending lots of time and $ to put the boat away for the winter isn’t the best part of ownership.

I am at the end of our first full year in a “big boat” >40’ and I also admit the work regime required is hefty. I do most maintenance and upgrade projects (with the exception of wash/waxes) and this boat kicked my butt over the last 15 months... I hope the next year will be easier.

On the other side my wife and I have really enjoyed the longer and more comfortable trips.
We have started to plan out next years trips.

Brian I am sad to hear you have sold your boat and wish you well with your next adventure. I am always torn between spending time with my buddies playing golf or being on the boat. I love both hobbies but found boating is way more relaxing :D and I am better at pushing throttles than hitting a golf ball. Lol.

We (wife & I) considered putting our boat up for sale this past summer after owning it for 5 years. We had two individuals interested in wanting to buy it and I want to move up in size to 55/60’. After serious consideration and discussion with many others we have stepped back on this for now. Our boat is in awesome condition, we have made many upgrades, put in a lot of proactive maintenance improvements and have everything where we want it. Sure there will always be repairs/maintenance but this is part of owning a boat and anyone who has the love of owning a boat knows this. Most of us look for the next project to accomplish whether it be an upgrade or proactive maintenance to prevent issues when we travel. For me this is all part of the hobby of owning a boat.

Of course the bigger the boat the bigger the maintenance, supplies, potential upgrades and running cots. We use our boat for 4 to 5 months out of the year here in the NE and are not ready yet to take it south for the winters. When that time comes then it may be justified to move up in size so for now I will continue to drool over the 55/60 boats I see on the water :p

I think it's also important to acknowledge, at least for me, I rather enjoy the projects, upgrades, maintenance. It gives me a wonderful alternative to my daily routine! Do I wish those things weren't as expensive as they so often are? Of course! But my boats are fantastic diversions. My mind gravitates to the boats and what's next practically every single day! Sort of a secret hobby/lifestyle that most can't really relate to! The pride and joy is not unlike a guy who buys any other toy.

To all my fellow gettin-older boaters, there is an alternative. Get rid of the monster yachts (blasphemy!) and get something smaller that requires a lot less maintenance with less stuff that breaks and you too can keep boating.

Not to mention with smaller boat you can write checks for the maintenance Instead of DIY!

Brian,
Congrats on the sale! If you don't jump back in next year we will miss you & Kathy at the beach. This year blew for us as mom was frequently ill requiring Sherri & I on the mainland most of the summer. Now that she has passed I suspect we may get more time on the water in the coming years. Accommodations for our family on our vessel still present a problem though. Best of luck on your next venture!

Congrats Brian, and I can say the last few months being boatless was HORRIBLE.

Like you were not 100% sure what we want next, and not having the desire to take the risk of hopping on a plane to run around the country to look has been miserable.

By mid July I was ready to pickup a center console just to get out on the water but the admiral said no, then in August confided she made a mistake!

Anyhow, good luck in your search and thanks for the time you spent answering my questions about the 58DB.

Thinking a center console and a Class A Motor Home..........

Well looks like my decision has been made for me. Putting the big boat up for sale and I'm sad about it.

Sorry to hear it. But hopefully you can look forward to shopping again when you're ready to jump back in the pond.

Its not an easy choice.. As some of you know our 48 sundancer is up far sale. We have hesitation selling it but also realize if we want to take a different path in life (live-aboard) we need to sell her before we can make the next step.

Your in good company, we did just that last week. Feels sad and liberating at the same time. I’m looking forward to having a few months with out having a boat taking up time I should have been using getting the ranch prepared for winter. I also wanted to make damn sure we are in a strong position to strike should the next boat pop on the market. I’ve had two freinds recently purchase a move up boat prior to selling their current boat and both suffered lengthy dual expenses for several months before they could unload.

Been there, done that, with this boat and my 400EC for 8 months. It was a bit expected since we bought at the end of the season but still no fun.

Very interested in hearing about which boats are being considered for live-aboard and where you think you'll keep it moored.

This is the position we need to be in. The boats we are looking at sell very quickly when they hit the market. Hadn't planned on moving on from the 48 so quickly but we have learned our jobs are portable and after a summer of riots in Minnesota we are ready to get south and live a bit differently.

Looking at Nordhavn, Marlow, Flemming and Selene. The thought is to start out in Nashville or Chattanooga, TN to get settled then spend some extensive time cruising the east coast/gulf/Caribbean

Having contemplated this over the last year or so as well I would suggest you add Offshore, Outer Reef and Grand Banks Aleutian to your list depending on your desired budget.
