Just a date hiding in the history books but for me this date has spiked my interest lately. As I have traveled from port to port on Lake Michigan the past few years I never get tiered reading about the 1500+ shipwrecks scattered about, even as travel over a mark on my chart plotter, I think about the souls lost to this lake of many moods. I was having dinner the other day with one of my brothers our conversation was about our ancestry and that our family started in a small town in the Netherlands, he then told me a story about several of our ancestors who lost their lives aboard a ship that burned on Lake Michigan. Ok now you are talking about my playground! On Nov. 21, 1847 the Phoenix a steam ship leaving Sheboygan, Wisconsin caught on fire, the records say some 250 people died either by fire or the fridge cold water. We were in Sheboygan a couple years ago, now I’ll have to go back to the spot they perished and lay a wreath in their honor. RIP
