Got a real puzzle for ya this time. Shortly after resetting the GFI for the stbd systems, we noticed that the galley systems were out, including the coffee maker. :smt089

Tried to reset the GFI in the corner cabinet, but it's buttons wouldn't work. Thinking it was defective, I replaced it, but the new one wouldn't work either. Using a simple circuit tester, I was able to tell that I had power in both black wires, BUT only one of the two white neutrals was completing the circuit. The outlet itself, along with the galley systems, was still offline.

I really fear the worst as far as a repair goes. How can that one white wire be traced and repaired without ripping out the whole galley? Could there be an easier fix? I just can't figure out how something that never moves and never gets any wear-and-tear can completely fail like this. Could this have anything to do with the stbd systems GFI popping? Any ideas?

Thanks.

David

David,
Look at your A/C wiring diagram, and follow it back, as most of it is daisy chained.
One of the whites must be "open" at a receptical further back, say maybe in the aft cabin, or the head, or such.

Probably a simple fix if you follow it back :smt001 "methodically" :smt001 .

When you say that both BLACKS are hot....how are you meausing this. When they are connected to the outlet or not. Only ONE should be hot if they are not connected to the outlet. That would be the supply pair.

Getting very basic here, when you replaced the GFI outet, did you make sure that you put the SUPPLY pair (Black and White) on the supply side of the GFI?

there should be one pair which is connected to LINE IN on gfi on one side and breaker on main panel on other end
second pair should be connected to line out on gfi (this is line what is going to be protected by gfi)
once you connect it right way try to reset gfi
if test button is still not working check if your shore line plug is not loose
if there is no good ground coming to boat (green wire) gfi will not work

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!! :smt038 (for now)

You all were right - it was the GFI, at least that's what we're going with. The problem I experienced when I put the new one on was a result of my lack of experience. I didn't realize it needed to be wired a certain way. Basically, I had the black and white wires on their correct sides, BUT I didn't have the "line" wires and "load" wires where they should be. We got the Sea Ray guys in Florida on the line and they were GREAT, as usual. By the time we figured it out, we had taken out the microwave to get access to the coffee maker plug, tested everything, taken down the main panel, and changed the GFI out a number of times.

Finally, Marc, from Sea Ray, helped us with the wiring configuration. Fortunately, the "line" wires had already been marked as is customary in the profession. So, tomorrow, I get to put is all back together.

We're not sure what made it all fail in the first place - we're going with a shore power spike that killed the original GFI, but I suppose time will tell.

I love the learning process, I just wish it wasn't always so frustrating.

Thanks for all the help.
