Anyone purchase and register a boat recently during covid in New York State? The DMV site is vague so I have to call tomorrow but I’m hoping I can mail in the documents. The first appt available in the local dmv is October 5th

I found it - it’s all by mail in our area. Unfortunately that seems to mean there is no temp reg issued. It’s a documented vessel and currently registered, but I have to assume that means it can’t leave the slip under my control until we get the temp or permanent.

I’ve been boating all season on an expired registration. I had waited almost an entire year to get documentation paperwork back from the C.G. and couldn’t register without it... I think most of the law enforcement understands the dmv issues. I’ve been keeping my paperwork on board in case I am stopped. I’d rather not mail in a check for the taxes, where it could linger in some office in Alban for 8 months. Going to wait to make that payment in person. Governor must not want our tax dollars!

Not only is it all by mail but it seems slow. I'm on my second round with them for the same registration due to a different tax form they wanted. I've been running the boat-very near you-with no numbers or registration sticker for a couple of months now. Passed many Coast Guard and Sheriffs boats in the river and the Bay without challenge.

I drove my car for a month with an expired registration even though I had mailed in the renewal paperwork and check 6 weeks before it expired. They understand.

I'd fill in and sign all of the forms and send them in the mail to the DMV. Make copies of the paperwork and the check and carry them on the boat. If you get stopped, just show them your copy of the paperwork. I think you'd be okay.

Here in CNY, our local DMV has a drop box. Filled out all the forms, put them, the title, and a blank check in and envelope and dropped it in the box. Was leery of leaving a blank signed check, but the lobby that the box is located in has a Sheriffs deputy minding the store. He told me the DMV empties the box 3X a day.
Got my reg and stickers back in the mail 2 days later.

Thanks guys, the USCG doc is interesting since this is a documented boat. I planned on sending the notarized CG bill of sale in since we won’t have our COD for a long time but I’m also way more comfortable doing this in person. The current reg on the boat is good until 2021 and we’ll have the notarized current COD as well as the bill of sale. I have less than 6 weeks of our season left, I might just wait til dmv is open.

I used drop box like akwalker said and got my reg/stickers in 1 week BUT...Received my title in the mail with the previous owners lien listed (I provided original copy of release with paperwork) spoke with NY dmv in Dutchess County and they said whoever ran my paperwork didn’t enter it correctly. Liens on boats need to be entered into the system a certain way and Cars/trucks are much more strait forward.
Basically someone at dmv f****d up and now I’m left trying to get through to the title office in Albany to get my paperwork back. I’ve tried the title office 10x and get the covid busy recording. At this point I’m going to contact the previous owner to see if he can acquire another copy.
I really wanted to do this in person but after getting annoyed by the Sheriffs out on the water and in my slip multiple times I finally decided to do the drop off title/reg. My advice..wait for that Oct 5th apt!!!
