Official (1998-2002) 310 Sundancer Thread

I'd like to replace my 3 batteries with dual purpose AGM's, but my mechanic friend says I should really use starting batteries for starting the two engines. Somewhere on this site, I've read about how the three batteries are configured (assigned), but I can't seem to find those posts now.

All three of my batteries are on the starboard side of the boat. Two of them are outboard of the third. I thought I had read about other 310's having one battery on one side and two on the other, so I'm not sure if mine is an unusual situation. I have two questions:

- Do any of you folks have your boats configured with all three dual purpose batteries?
- Is there any way to know the function of each battery based on the locations I described?

Thanks for any input

There is a lot of confusion about the term "dual purpose" vs BAB (Big Ass Battery). Don't get sucked into all the marketing hype. As long as your battery has sufficient cranking amps AND meets your needs wrt Ah, it is by definition 'dual purpose', whether the label says dual purpose or not.

I replaced all 3 of my batteries with these BABs.

Mine are all 3 on the starboard side as well. The two in parallel start the Starboard engine and run the house loads (fridge, cabin lights, etc).
The single battery starts the port engine and runs the helm (MFD, VHF, anchor light, etc)

Thanks Bob. I have twin 350's. The "dual purpose" group 27 AGM's at West Marine have 900 marine cranking amps (just about the same as the batteries you bought). Your CCA is a bit higher though. After checking into it, I realized that the batteries I'm replacing are group 27 "dual purpose" that are rated at 800 MCA. I always had enough cranking power with them, so I guess I should be fine with the AGM version.

Throttle Logo.jpg

If possible, I'd like to find a manual on this throttle handle assembly. I couldn't find a name on it anywhere, but there is a logo at the base of each handle (see photo). Does anyone know who the manufacturer is?

I really think that is a Teleflex logo but damned if I can find any info. on it. Maybe my search skills are off today. See what you can find.
What do you need to do any how? They are not complexed controls.

Thanks for the input techmitch. I recently changed a cable an noticed that the little U-bolts that hold the cable in place seem to be rusting. You'd expect them to be stainless steel or brass, but these look like they must be chrome-plated steel. Also, had I dropped one them during the repair process, it would have fallen into the "black hole" below the helm, never to be seen again. I was just hoping to get a parts list and order new ones and maybe a couple of spares.

These shift and throttle controls were originally sold under the Morse brand name, then Morse was acquired by Teleflex and then spun off to form Sea Star Solutions. Sea Star was recently acquired by Dometic. Not sure if they still support the older products and sell parts.

Thanks Motorvader!
You're welcome. Good luck. I have them on my boat as well. I have marine surplus store nearby and your post has motivated me to stop by and see if I can pick up spare parts for my throttle and shift controls. The new versions of these mechanical controls are totally different designs, not made as well in my opinion and I don't know to what extent the mfr. supports the old controls.

I have a 2002 with V drives, 5.7 350 MAGS, MIE. Somewhere on this site I read there are two different dip sticks used for port and starboard. I have looked at several sources and find conflicting part numbers using my serial numbers. Anyone able to help me:
Are there two different part numbers used on the inboards? And how do you tell them apart after pulling both dipsticks?
Thanks

Mine look the same for both engines.

They are the same. When the engines are marinized, Mercruiser doesn't know what the final placement will be for any given engine.

You can prove it to yourself by swapping the dipsticks between engines.

Has anyone found a good location to install bulkhead mounted electronics modules on a 310? I purchases an ACR AIS module, a SIMRAD NEP-2 network hub, and a Navico WM-4 SIRIUS weather receiver for my electronics refit and from what I've seen on other posts there isn't a lot of room behind the front of the helm console. Has anyone installed electronics in the compartment under the double companion seat or small closet/locker in the aft cabin? I want to have access to service these units without removing the chart plotter. I really don't want to give up space in any of the cockpit lockers and they're somewhat expose to the weather. Also thinking about looking behind the plastic cup holder and storage bin at the helm on the starboard side.
Space is definitely limited!

Excuse me...purchased.

There is a virtual cavern behind the cupholder panel with easy access to power.

bobeast,

A cavern is just what I need! Thanks very much for sharing this. That's a perfect location and I won't be giving up any valuable storage locker space. Our weather just turned cooler in FL so its the perfect time to do an electronics refit.

If you reach your arm in and feel around, you'll find that there is a "tunnel" leading into the helm electronics area, and another leading into the cabin behind the power panels. You can also run wires from the cavern up to the arch, or down to the bilge, but to do so you'll have to punch a hole in the aft bulkhead. If you do so, be sure and seal it back up around the new wires, as it is intended to keep bilge fumes from making it into the cabin.

Thanks for providing this detail. I have a new ICOM VHF with remote mic and need to run the cable from the helm to the cabin and this sounds like the best path.

On separate subject, have you found a solution to reseal the aft portlight on the port side? This portlight is concealed on the inside of the boat between the deck side and head liner. I contacted the service manager at a local Marinemax dealer and they were no help. I'm not one to simply apply clear silicone on inner and outer perimeter of the bezel - I want to come up with a permanent or serviceable solution. the outer able to help. I'm weighing 3 options: a) cut apart the lens, remove the screws inside, disassemble, have my talented fiberglass repair guy cover the hole and bond the outer bezel and an elliptical piece of smoked Lexan to the side of the deck to create a "faux portlight" than will never leak or b) remove the fiberglass companionway door cover, slide the door to starboard and install a 6" deck plate above the offending portlight so I can access inside screws from above and install a 2nd 6" deck plate just aft of the portlight in the head to access the inside screws in the 1-1/2" to 2" between the deck side and port wall of the fiberglass head liner. All of this so I can remove and reseal this portlight as needed. I suspect the posts about mystery leaks in front of the head door and on the mid-cabin sole are related to this non-serviceable portlight. I apologize for the crude photo shopping!

Bob, The portlight on the right is the one I'm referring to.
