Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

Hi everyone, I'm doing a survey next week on a 05 Sea Ray 340 8.1 V-drives... It has org manifolds and rises, with low hrs... I know hrs don't matter on maintenance items as for those... My plan is if I do buy it,,, Change manifolds & rises, Oil coolers, Trans coolers, and maybe shaft seals since while I have the manifolds off I can get under the engines... Whats everyone's opinion on org manifolds & rises from 2005???

Check to see if you have aluminum or cast iron manifolds. The aluminum one will have to be swapped out if they haven't already. Manifold are considered an expendable maintenance items so maybe remove and inspect, then decide? Risers.... they are pretty sturdy, not much going on there. Again, maybe at most remove and inspect since you are doing that to the manifolds. If you end up reinstalling the manifolds, give the manifolds a really good rinse while you have them out. Plan on replacing all the sensors because they don't remove easily after the plastic has been heated over and over. I hope you're a small guy.

If original, the manifolds are way overdue and the elbows may need to be done also - however they are stainless and can/should be checked out for weld cracks or leaks.

Also, in 2005 they switched to the Cool Fuel 3 system - you might want to see if that issue was addressed.
Lots of other things to check but that is what the survey is for.

Twice on our cruise this week, the domestic water pump sounded and operated fine when we left the dock, but arriving at the next dock after a cruise, the water pump did not sound right (it was very loud but water did come out of the faucets).
The first time, I added more fresh water to the tank (the gauge said 50%), and that fixed the sound.
The second time (yesterday) I just walked away, knowing I would be back today.
Anyone else have this happen, and what is done to resolve it?

Hi Everyone,
I am preparing to replace my transmission coolers. Seems to be a fairly easy job, but i have a question about the diamond step on the port engine.
Any issues with removing the nuts holding it to the transmission ? I won't break a seal?

Thanks in advance!

Jeffrey: No issue with pulling those bolts. Also, go back to my post 2895 in this thread for other comments regarding change out of the trans coolers. I would hope that you are going to change out the transmission fluid at the same time.

Thank you and yes, I plan on changing the fluid as well.

Anyone replace the Smartcraft SC5000 with a VesselView and which one did you go with? How did it fit in the same spot? Plug and play? Or something else? My Smartcraft screen is failing.

I've already replaced the chartplotter with with a Raymarine A9 series and a Raymarine Quantum radar

Collecting parts for the winter projects
Looking at changing out the c80 for a axiom9
Adding the quantum radar
And adding sat tv and possibly autopilot

question 1-which auto pilot would be commended ? Easy diy install ?

- is my c80 plotter antenna and transducer compatible with the axiom9? Will I have to run new wires ?

lastly I’d like to see my arch pictures from people the have radar and sat tv

thanks for the help
Itching to get back on the water summer is a long ways away project list keeps getting longer

Hello everyone. I just signed final acceptance on a 2006 340DA. It has the 8.1’s with the v-drives and just under 700 hours. It looks to be a good boat with some solid care given over its life. We are really excited.
I wanted to say thanks for the 2970 posts worth of information in this thread, it gave me some great insight to my purchase and some great ideas for things ahead.
We are scheduled to close on 12/15 and it can’t get here soon enough. Thankfully So Cal has year round boating!!

Welcome Sea to See, your boat certainly looks clean! And I don't see too many other boats with the soft top option.

Thank you. For a 15 yr old boat, it’s in pretty good shape.
I do like the soft top option without the support poles, but the backside will need to change to a camper canvas style for our usage.

New Garmin GPS Chartplotter question for my 2005 340DA

It's time to retire my Raymarine E80.
The unit still works along with the radar, it's just not user friendly and lacks bells and whistles.

So my question is, I'm leaning towards the Garmin GPS Map 1242 or 943 and I'm curious if anyone has installed this unit in the console on the left side where the original display was installed?
Not sure that the 12" unit will fit so next option is the 9".
I'll also be adding the phantom radar along with it.
My boat has the vessel view display directly above the helm wheel so I'd rather not have to move everything else around.

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,

The 12" model is unfortunately not going to fit in the panel. Install width is 12.5w x 8.1875h.

I went with the 9" models for my Axiom installs because of this.

BTW, we manufacturer these panels shown as well as sell the OEM finished panels from Tecnografic. We have a full set of black panels available for the 340SDA or can get the OEMs in a variety of finishes. If you are interested just send me PM. We also have a variety of adapter panels for replacing the stock Ray215 with today's smaller models.

I have the same top, and the back portion was not changed to accommodate the camper canvas. See the image below. I can grab a photo of the inside this weekend if you need it.

Thanks Kevin.

Are you happy with the Raymarine?
I'm not sold on either Garmin or Raymarine, I just have lots of friends here in South Florida that have all gone to Garmin.

Looks like the 12" unit would fit where my Vessel view is installed but that just makes my project even more time consuming.

Are you able to get engine info on your Raymarine display?

Your top is exactly what I will be looking to do. Any pictures would be appreciated.
Also, any information on your dinghy set up would be helpful too. I need to figure out that addition as well.
Thank you!!

Raymarine vs Garmin is like discussing religions.

Both do what they say but come at it from different angles. Garmin seems to be more consumer targeted and Raymarine seem to be targeting professionals - at least that is my perspective of the marketing. I have worked with and now sell both brands. I also think a lot of people jumped to Garmin before the Axioms came out because the older RM was much less friendly. The Axioms are running a hardened Android at the core now and I have seen an number of OS improvements and apps being added from RM. If your familiar with Android you will quickly catch on to the Axioms.

A lot comes down to what interface you like better and works for your purpose. As far as getting engine data on them either model is capable if you install a smartcraft to nema2000 gateway or the new Smartcraft Connect from mercury.

While I do like my Axioms my only gripe was the OS update installs. It is a download all and insert SD card and update from MFD. It will attempt to update all devices on the RayNet (ethernet). This did not always work for me and I had to manually update one of my paired units independently.

Either way I think they are both great products.

I replaced the stock C80 on our 2008 with a Garmin 943xsv. I used a premade adapter plate that Jim at BOE was working on this time last year. I wish the screen was a bit bigger, but it works well enough for the TN river. I also added the Smartcraft to NMEA 2000 adapter on to the network so I can see engine and some ships status on there as a back to the original VesselView and round gauges.
