Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

Good morning all,
Man, these are nice boats! We have been out for a couple of Christmas light harbor cruises and have been able to lightly stretch her legs a couple of times so far. With 10 people on board, she still has plenty of elbow room for those types of events. The wife and I stayed on the boat one night just to test things out and the v-berth is roomier than we expected. I have ordered a 4” memory foam topper for the bed though. Lol
So the “to be updated” list is growing and a few things have been checked off already. I think the first major project I want to tackle is the addition of an inverter/charger and battery system to power the 110v system while away from the dock. I would prefer to keep the generator for charging batteries, cooking and running the a/c - heat as much as possible. There seems to be space in the floor storage for what I’m looking to do and it would keep the weight center and low, but I need to find a path from there to the electrical panel. Does anyone have any leads on where I should be looking to run?
Has anyone installed an inverter system in their boat and have any suggestions??

Happy New year everyone, Just curious if anyone has a picture of where they put there fusion Radio... And how did they get the Clarion radio to come out... Did they make a plate or something or put it where the CD changer is?

The Clarion has 2 screws on each side behind cover plates. Fusion has an adapter plate to fit a standard DIN opening.

edit: on airplane Wi-Fi and didn’t feel like cropping the pic to make the orientation correct.

Sea to See, our 360 Dancer has an inverter, mounted in the far rear stbd corner of the cockpit, with the batteries between the engines. PO does not know about the installation, nor do I. Just some location ideas for you.

Morning all. Looking for suggestions for replacement/installation of transducer for Garmin 943xsv. Just installed in my 2004 340da.

Just ordered a hole bunch of stuff and Emily from BOE Marine was really helpful.. Since we are a member of this site also got a great discount.

She sold me a

New Garmin GPS Chartplotter question for my 2005 340DA

It's time to retire my Raymarine E80.
The unit still works along with the radar, it's just not user friendly and lacks bells and whistles.

So my question is, I'm leaning towards the Garmin GPS Map 1242 or 943 and I'm curious if anyone has installed this unit in the console on the left side where the original display was installed?
Not sure that the 12" unit will fit so next option is the 9".
I'll also be adding the phantom radar along with it.
My boat has the vessel view display directly above the helm wheel so I'd rather not have to move everything else around.

Any input is appreciated.

We put the Garmin 7610 where our E120 was, added GHI20 MFD where the speed O was (love that), and the HD 24 inch Radar. Very satisfied with the set up. Also added SeaStar Hydraulic Steering and Garmin Reactor 40 Autopilot with Shadow Drive and Remote, also very nice set up. The 7610 was tight and had to trim the sun cover just a little, but fits.

We also have an inverter. It was installed by the PO. It is a 1250 watt and is located behind the drawer under the electrical panel. Has a relay box that shuts it down when the genny or shore power is plugged in. Powers up from the forward auxiliary switch. Powers all of the outlets on the accessory breaker on the 110 side. Very nice for minor electrical items. Fans, blender, chargers, small air pumps, TVs, etc. Runs off the starboard battery bank (3 AGM Gr 32s) and has monitor that shuts it down at 11.5 volts which will usually only do that overnight. Very nice system.

Doest the boat come with Hydraulic steering? Also did you do the Install yourself? I'm about to the same, I just brought a 8610xsv, gonna put it where you put yours, a 943xsv Gonna put that one in the middle of wheel, I did a 18 Inch Radar and Going to put in the Garmin Reactor 40 Autopilot with Shadow Drive and Remote. I'm hoping the steering will work from factory.

You shoudn't have a problem since you have inboards and do not have to mess with the power steering issue that I did. I had an Autopilot with my Rack n Pinion steering with my Bravo 3s and it was never right. I went out on a friends boat that had the same SeaStar setup that we just installed before deciding to to do it, and it was real nice. My steering never was "power" feeling even after changing the hydraulic cylinder, steering cable and power steering pump.
It was like turning the wheel of a car without the motor running. My friends boat was so easy you could turn it with 1 finger. The original autopilot (Sitek) used to snake really bad at slow speeds and veer off course all of a sudden when cruising - to the point it was not useful. Had several marine electronic techs attempt to "get it right", but none could. The new Garmin is dead on course, be it just a straight heading or following a preset course.

Washburns boatyard in Solomons did my upgrades (SeaStar steering, GMI20 MFD, 2 new cam bus cables, VV 703, Nema 2000, and other minor things. They tuned it all to talk to each other, calibrated the radar and educated me on how everything functioned. It is very nice and was well worth it. The steering and autopilot are the best part. I highly recommend Washburns for any service, mechanical/electronic, cosmetic and so on. They are well respected in our area.

Hi everyone, I have been looking all over the forum for any reviews on the hurley h20 davit system that may have been installed on a 2003 and up 340DA and have come up with some posts but with dead ends. Has anyone installed this system and how difficult has pulling your tender up with the height from the water to the top of the platform been?

Another tip I read in the forum is to paint your chain at a distance that tells you the anchor is just below the surface, at which point you can go forward to complete the hoist, maybe even knocking some mud off the flukes.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking 22# but I like the idea of the 33#. I will have to look at the specs on the windless for capabilities. I will mark the chain and just ordered the stainless hull guard. I am heading to the Boston Boat show in a few weeks and hoping I can score on reasonably there. I would think we could buy them with different shaft lengths in order to accommodate the boat.

I always like just adding about a 100ft of Anchor chain... Its makes everything else heaver keeps the bow down when running and always grabs when dropping Anchor

Hi all. My name is Mike! New to the site and looking at a 2003.5 340. First of I’d like to say thank you to all the contributors on this thread! The info you guys and gals have been sharing is just awesome and it’s helped me learn a bunch.

I was hoping to hear some real world experiences on annual maintenance cost. A little info on boat I’m looking at. It’s run in salt water.

Year 2003
V-Drives w/528 hours
- annual maintenance performed by mechanic (charged $1,400 for last 3 years)
- manifolds and elbows replaced 9/21
Gen set w/356 hours (Koehler 5E)
- serviced yearly and new carb, fuel pumps and plugs on 9/21
New batteries 10/31
Water heater replaced 12/20
Port motor heat exchanger replaced 9/20
EIM and all switches replaced 2021
Canvas and Eisenglass in 2019 (it’s in ok to decent shape)

I spoke to the mechanic (former Sea Ray employee) who’s worked on the boat for the last 3 years and he said that the owner was pretty meticulous about maintenance and that the engines and boat over all are in very good shape for the age.

I can do simple things like replace fluids, plugs, some electrical but this would be my first dual inboard boat so not a tonn experience but not afraid to roll my sleeves up and learn.

With all that said what are peoples thoughts? Also big ticket items like manifolds….I’m reading like every 3-4 years? Any thing else I should be thinking about!

Thanks!

This is a fairly easy boat to maintain and the cost will generally be based on how much you will take on yourself and how much you contract out.

Depending on hours of use basically you are looking at oil changes for both engines and generator. Fluid changes for transmissions and replacing anodes. Of course you will also have bottom paint and cleanings to worry about. That will depend on how long it sits in the water (wet slip vs lift). Down in FL you will also probably want to flush/clean the A/C cooling lines and maintain them with dropping some bromine tabs in the strainers.

Things like manifolds are probably good for 5-6 years if flushed but once you get a few years in you probably want to inspect at least annually. The elbow are stainless and since they were recently replace will probably give you 10+ years. You will also probably be changing the water pump impellers and changing out spark plugs every couple of years.

I am sure I am missing something but outside of repairs for things that go like starters, alternators, pumps etc it's not all that bad.

Sounds like there was a lot of maintenance taken care of by the PO so you should be in good shape for a little while.

Also, run those generators - 356 hours it quite low for that age unit. They like to be run as often as possible - I like to run mine every time I go on trip more than just a couple of minutes.
