Official 380 Thread

Please post the part numbers and how it goes, I have the same boat…. You gonna do both, typically when one goes? The other is on borrowed time… lol

This part fits 454 Mag MPI Horizon Gen VI
Engine Serial no. OL 086050 Thru OL 674000
I am only changing the one at this time.
I will monitor the other one.
I am in fresh water so salt is not an issue here.
I owned a 1997 370 for almost 15 years with same tranny coolers.
Never had an issue at all. I believe it is just a bit of bad luck to go bad.
I will be installing the new one and flushing the system this weekend.
Hopefully we are all set after this.

Hello, we just closed on your new to us 02 380 with 8.1 Horizons. I know it’s been mentioned already but can’t seem to find the post.

My question is, what’s the best way to get engine data to my Axiom? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks all!

@Mig22 did it, I think you still need a gateway, a different one than the 7.4’s and you get a ton more info

The Fox Marine ECM/PCM-555 Engine Gateways should be compatible with your engines. https://fox-marine.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=81&product_id=68

For a twin engine setup, you’ll need the following to get started viewing engine data on your chartplotter/MFD.
2 qty Fox Marine ECM/PCM-555 Engine Gateway
2 qty Fox Marine (or equivalent) N2k T-connector
2 qty Fox Marine (or equivalent) N2k 2m Drop Cable
1 qty N2k Starter Kit with 15ft backbone or 32.8ft backbone <- These are available at most marine electronics retailers
1 qty Aux Switch at your helm to power the N2k network

Take a look at simplified N2k network diagrams as you prepare to layout your set-up.

Go with the smart craft connect gateway and it will display data on the vessel view app. I have the old nema 2k gateway and it works great on the dashboard app. I also installed the Vessel View mobile which sends data over bluetooth. The engines have a terminated CAN-P Bus on the top, I extended to to to H blocks and then ran a seatalk ng cable to the helm. it is a solid set up and gives all data elements to the Axiom.

Here is an update.
Changed Tranny cooler and pumped out fluid. Fluid looked exactly like Strawberry milkshake.
I removed the filter and cleaned it with mineral spirits. Filtered the dirty mineral spirits through a coffee filter, and checked for metal pieces. There was hardly no debris in the filter. That was good to see.
I filled the system with new fluid. It took 4.5 quarts.
Ran engine up to operating temp. Then ran engine at 1500 rpm for roughly 5 mins. Throttled down to idle and shifted tranny from forward to reverse several times. Tranny shifted perfectly. I Shut off engine, checked fluid and tranny fluid was just a little pink then. I did this same procedure 4 more times. After the 4th time the fluid looked the same as it did when I poured it from the bottle.
Needless to say I was very happy to see that.
I think I caught it soon enough and dodged a big bullet.

Actually I just put an order in for one! A bit more money but from the looks of it will have a lot of data available up on my Axiom!

I have a 2000 Searay 380 with 7.4 Hoizons with Hurth HSW 630 trannys.
My question is. When the engines are running they have a rattling noise when in neutral at idle speed. The rattle appears to be in the tranny and happens on both engines.
When you throttle up the noise goes away or when you engage forward or reverse the noise goes away. Is this normal and is it harming the trannys.

Here’s a thread to read:

Thanks for the info
Mine rattles when in Neutral at idle not when in gear. Is that the same thing?

My Starboard rattles in gear at idle and up to about 1100 RPM.

The above referenced link is conflicted...BTW.

I tend to lean towards an engine miss being broadcast. When my engine runs 100% right, there is no rattle at neutral idle. If it is not, there is a rattle.

"Pump Alarm Fwd Emergency" alarm is ONLY when the float switch and bilge pump turns on in main centerline below floor storage area. This pump/switch is mounted separately and independent of the sump pump box. When you look down just to the rear of the sump pump box you will see the bilge pump/switch. It is possible that what ever water is entering the sump pump box is not being pumped out fast enough and it flows out into the bilge area and turns on the Fwd Emergency Pump thus giving you the alarm.
Simple test is to push the lever on the Fwd bilge pump switch and if the "Fwd Alarm" dispaly comes on then you know what is happening.

Did you check your fresh water tank level to see if it constantly going down without use (Leaking?)
If the fresh water tank is leaking where does the water go? There is no water at all anywhere that I can find.

Thanks for the info

I have the same issue in my starboard motor. I confirmed that it is not an ignition/tune issue but it is the transmission damper plate. When the plate wears (after many hours) it rattles while in neutral to around 1100 rpm but goes away under load (in gear) and at higher rpm's.
This is "normal" for the 454 MAG MPI's with the V-drive but is annoying as f**k. The rubber shock and metal plate loosen up over time. The plate is designed to absorb the shock from the engine to transmission when going in and out of gear and in neutral it isn't doing anything (but rattling!)

I purchased a new damper plates ($500) and will install myself at the next haul out. Port motor has this very issue at pre purchase survey and it was replaced as part of the deal and rattling went away and never came back. Starboard side has the original plate from 2000 so it is waaaay past due to be replaced but not an "emergency".

My plan is to replace the plate while out of the water but NOT by removing the engine first and I plan on documenting it here with photos. Maybe this time next year.

If it is your tank...that is 70 gallons when full? Trust me that at some point with that volume of water it will find its way into the bottom of a cabinet, the bilge etc It may not be the actual poly tank itself but it could be one of the many Whale etc quick connect fittings, the actual plastic tubing/plumbing could have cracked and is leaking.
Going back to my marine surveying days.....(with the owners permission) I would lower the water tank level to maybe 10 gallons and introduce copious amount of green non-toxic food coloring into the water tank. If you see green water anywhere inside your boat....BINGO.
Once you have fixed your issue you simply cycle fresh water thru the tank and the color is flushed out.

Which axiom do you have? I’m trying to decide between a 12” axiom+ or the axiom Pro.

Is there any way that it could be getting into the hull underneath the false floor in the salon floor storage areas?

Thanks very much for this info.
That is exactly what’s wrong with both of mine. I will have to look into replacing them both.
